Elementary Education makes a real difference to our future.

As an elementary education certified teacher, you will have a lasting impact on the students you teach.

Our B.S. in Elementary Education prepares you to be a Florida certified teacher in grades K-6. Your courses will be diverse — preparing you to teach all elementary subjects. You will practice hands on in real-world classrooms with local students from kindergarten through sixth grades. These courses will be the foundation for connecting theory to practice in private and public schools.

Specialized Concentrations

To help build your resume further, we offer concentrations in STEM Education and the Orton-Gillingham Approach — a research based instructional practice of reading that has proved effective with students with dyslexia and other reading difficulties.

Be Prepared

You’ll be fully prepared for the 21st-century classroom through our extensive training in instructional technology, including SMART© technologies, preparing you to teach in today’s state-of-the-art classrooms. You will also be exposed to a wide variety of classroom field experiences, and lab school opportunities.

Extensive Prepa­ra­tion

As an elementary education student, you’ll put all this learning into practice in real-world classrooms by completing over 1,000 hours in clinical experiences including the final internship.

Roberts Academy

The Roberts Academy, located in Lakeland in Polk county, is the only transitional school in the state serving students with dyslexia, allows majors to practice Education reading strategies using the Orton-Gillingham approach to reading.

ESOL Certification

Through the infusion of ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) techniques into the curriculum, you'll learn to work with students whose native language is not English, earning you a State of Florida ESOL endorsement upon graduation.

Engaged Learning in the Classroom

At Florida Southern College, you’ll engage in many hands-on activities in the classroom that model activities you can use in your field experiences and internship.

Our Early Learning Lab is home to students ages three to five where Elementary Education majors work hands-on delivering classroom instruction to students in one-on-one and small group settings

Applying to Florida Southern as a transfer student is easy.

If transferring less than 24 credits, we also need your:

Hollis Fellows in Education

As parents of a Florida Southern graduate, Mark and Lynn Hollis established the Hollis Fellows in Education Program to provide scholarships to education majors who plan to pursue teaching careers.

$7,500, plus $500 for Textbooks

The Minority Teacher Education Scholars (MTES) program is a collaborative performance-based scholarship program for African-American, Hispanic-American, Asian-American, and Native American students administered by the Florida Fund for Minority Teachers, Inc. (FFMT).
