Citrus and Horticultural Science: Citrus

Strong Horticultural Science Industry Opportunities

U.S. agricultural exports were valued at $140 billion in 2018 (USDA). The Citrus and Horticultural industries in Florida generate billions of dollars a year alone.

Top Reasons

Unique Citrus Program

We have the nation’s only bachelor's degree program specifically in citrus and is known throughout Florida's citrus industry for the quality of our program.

Citrus Grove On Campus

The Florida Southern campus has a collection of citrus trees for use in hands-on engaged learning in classes.

Prime Location

Located in central Florida, our close proximity to the Citrus Research and Education Center in Lake Alfred allows us to bring in expert guest speakers from the industry.

Plug Into a Supportive Community

When you join FSC's chapter of Alpha Gamma Rho, an agricultural social and professional fraternity, you'll get connected with thousands of members worldwide who can assist in your career development.

Conduct Original Research

Our support of engaged learning encourage you to explore everything from the genetics of heritage rose varieties, to testing new citrus rootstock varieties, to developing commercially viable methods for growing greenhouse crops.

Gain Real-World Experience

Gain on-the-job training in an aspect of citrus or horticultural science that interests you. Participate in a summer internship with a nursery, tree farm, citrus grove operation, agri-chemical company, a fertilizer company, or a research lab.

I like to work closely with my students, from a scientific research point of view. Define a problem, design a method of coming up with the answer to the problem, and then actually do the research to find the answers. I think it is important to instill the sense of curiosity and joy and wonder about what we do.

Clubs And More

Alpha Gamma Rho, the national agricultural social/professional fraternity is active on campus.
