Office of Student Travel

The junior journey trip to Greece opened my eyes: we visited historical sites and learned their history, ate traditional meals and learned their significance, and spoke with locals and learned about their culture. FSC made this trip possible and has greatly contributed to the expansion of my world perspective.

Semester: Fall

FSC - 1 Credit Hour

Trip Leader: Dr. Bernardo Blanco

Participants on this trip will explore the organization of communities as well as the school system in Costa Rican rural areas. Students will have the opportunity to gather cross-cultural information as well as to realize what it is like to teach in contexts that are foreign or could be foreign to their experience. We will visit rural area schools in the Province of Guanacaste and Puntarenas, both in the Pacific Northwest. We will also visit eco-tourism areas (national parks, Arenal Volcano, and the capital city of San Jose.) and coffee plantations to see what is done and identify opportunities to engage the culture. Our pre-professional teachers will immerse in local classrooms to assist teachers and staff—this will require the implementation of strategies to engage elementary, middle, and high school students. Students will also perform community work in the area. In the case of students from other majors, there will also be activities dedicated to their field of study—nursing school, business, biology, etc.

Tropical Ecology: Bimini and Sharks

Tropical Ecology: Bimini and Sharks

Bimini, Bahamas

Oct 12 - Oct 18

Latin America - Biology

Semester: Fall

BIO 3316 - 4 Credit Hours

Trip Leader: Dr. Gabriel Langford

This field course will introduce you to the ecology of a tropical region. While ecology can be taught in the classroom, it is primarily a field science. One can describe the effects of fire, drought, predation, or competition in a lecture, but this is no substitute for seeing and experiencing the interactions between species and their environment in a natural setting. This course provides an opportunity for you to be immersed in a field setting and experience the science of ecology first-hand. We will spend the first part of the semester at Florida Southern College learning about the history, geology, and ecology of the tropical area we will visit for the required field portion of the course as well as learning techniques for collecting field data. The field study portion of the course will be spent looking at the different environmental and biological factors which structure the plant and animal communities of our field site. Specifically, for this course, we will learn about the sharks and rays (and many other organism we see) of the Bimini field site as we encounter them and we will learn about the role these organisms play in the tropical ecosystem.

***Yes, the field study is a REQUIRED portion of the course. We only meet required meeting hours during this course by attending the field study. This course cannot be completed without travel to the tropical field location.***

Belize: Blue Creek Rainforest Preserve and Mayan Ruins

Belize: Blue Creek Rainforest Preserve and Mayan Ruins

Belize

Oct 12 - Oct 19

Latin America - Multi-disciplined

Semester: Fall

1 Credit Hour

Trip Leader: Dr. Jason Macrander

Nestled along the banks of Blue Creek, the Institute for Zoology and Ecology's (IZE) private rainforest preserve and wildlife sanctuary offers an unparalleled international learning experience for students. This unique field station, situated in a pristine primary rainforest, provides an opportunity to observe and interact with Belize's rich biodiversity. From leaf-cutter ants and delicate tree snakes to the resonating howls of howler monkeys, the rainforest is a living laboratory of over 500 ornate bird species and elusive jaguars. The interconnected clear blue water pools on the preserve offer a refreshing swim, complemented by the magnificent "Hokeb Ha Cave" with crystalline lagoons and waterfalls. This untouched jungle paradise, staying true to IZE's founder Frederick J. Dodd's vision, serves as an ideal backdrop for immersive learning experiences. The learning adventure extends beyond the rainforest, incorporating visits to Mayan ruins such as Lubaantun and Nim Li Punit. These ceremonial centers showcase the distinctive Mayan architectural styles of southern Belize, with stone pyramids and residences. The students explore the cultural and historical significance of these ruins, gaining insights into the Mayan civilization's art, language, and ceremonial practices. Additionally, engaging activities like the Chocolate Farm Tour, Ethnobotany & Farming, Iguana Hike, Bird Walk, Monkey Hike, Jungle Climb, and Cave Tubing provide hands-on experiences, connecting students with the local communities, wildlife, and ecosystems. These excursions blend adventure with education, fostering a deeper understanding of conservation, sustainable practices, and the intricate relationship between humans and nature.
