Experience Lakeland Like a Local

Jul 11, 2025

Lakeland is a small city with big charm. Located between Tampa and Orlando, it’s the kind of place that surprises people, not with over-the-top attractions, but with its warmth, character, and strong sense of community. With 38 lakes scattered across the city, you’re never far from a scenic view or a quiet spot to take in the wildlife. Affectionately known as Swan City, Lakeland earned its nickname from the graceful birds that glide across its waters and have become a beloved symbol of the area. Historic buildings and colorful murals bring personality to the streets, where long-standing family businesses thrive alongside a wave of new, creative ventures. From peaceful parks to downtown events and local art, there’s always something happening just around the corner. Here's a closer look at some of the places locals love most.

Downtown Lakeland

Downtown Lakeland is the heart of the city, it’s walkable, welcoming, and always full of activity. The streets are lined with a mix of local restaurants, coffee shops, boutiques, and galleries that give the area its character and charm. Popular spots like Palace Pizza, Harry’s Seafood, and Black & Brew are just a few of the favorite restaurants located downtown but there are over 40 restaurant options to choose from, whether it’s for a quick lunch or a night out. On Saturday mornings, the downtown farmers market draws a crowd with its mix of fresh produce, handmade goods, and live music. The area comes alive again on the first Friday of every month, when the streets fill with food vendors, artists, and live entertainment. Throughout the year, downtown also hosts some of Lakeland’s biggest traditions, including the Christmas parade and Fourth of July fireworks, bringing the community together in celebration. It’s a part of town that always has something going on, and it’s easy to see why it’s a favorite for both locals and visitors.
