Test Optional Policy

Test Optional Policy

Florida Southern College recognizes that often strong academic talent and potential may not be readily reflected in standardized test scores.

Students who perform well inside the classroom and demonstrate strong involvement and character outside of it are frequently just as likely to be successful in college. As a result, Florida Southern is pleased to offer a test-optional policy. This will provide applicants an opportunity to apply for admissions consideration without submitting standardized test scores if they wish.

While Florida Southern provides equal consideration for students who choose not to submit standardized test scores, it is important to note that other academic information used as part of the holistic review process will be more heavily weighted and scrutinized in the absence of test scores; this includes rigor of and performance in high school curriculum, essay or personal statement, and letters of recommendation. Additional factors that are a part of consideration for admission at Florida Southern include co-curricular activities, community involvement, writing ability, and other academic and personal achievements.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I should apply as test-optional?

The option to apply under our test-optional policy is designed for students who perform well in the classroom but whose academic strength is not reflected in their standardized test scores. We recommend students who fit the profile described below consider applying under the test-optional policy:

  • A-/B+ GPA
  • SAT below 1140 (Evidence-based Reading and Writing and Math sections only)
  • ACT below 23

Are there populations of students that are encouraged to apply with standardized SAT or ACT test scores?

  • Students interested in our premier Hollingsworth Scholarship program should submit test scores for consideration.
  • Students interested in our Prestige-level scholarships like the Jenkins, McClurg, and Christoverson Scholarships should submit test scores for consideration.
  • Students eligible for the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship should apply to FSC and submit their test scores.
  • For international students, demonstrated English proficiency is required if English is not the first language of instruction or college English credits have not been earned. Learn more about application requirements for international students.

Will I be eligible for merit scholarships if I apply test-optional?

Yes. All applicants for admission will be considered for merit scholarships regardless of testing policy.

How do I select a testing policy?

Applicants will be prompted to select a testing policy on the application (Florida Southern Preferred Application, Common Application, and Coalition Application). The prompt will be:

Do you want your standardized (SAT and/or ACT) test scores considered in the admission selection process?

  • Yes, I want my standardized test scores considered for admission
  • No, I do not want my standardized test scores considered for admission

Once I choose an admission testing policy, can I change my mind?

Yes. You may change your admission testing policy by notifying your admission counselor.

If you initially elect not to submit your standardized test scores for admission consideration, you may decide to provide scores for review at a later point in the admission cycle. You should advise your counselor if you want us to review scores you have previously submitted or if you will be providing new ones.

If you elect to submit your scores but then decide you prefer they not be considered, you may designate this by contacting the Office of Admission, provided that an admission decision on your application has not yet been made.

Can I speak with an admissions counselor about my test scores or testing plan to determine whether to apply with test scores or as test-optional?

Yes. Your admissions counselor will be able to give guidance on applying with or without test scores. Please contact them to discuss your individual plan.
