Navigating the college search and choosing a major can feel overwhelming. Florida Southern’s Summer Advantage helps rising 9th and 10th graders explore academic disciplines, experience hands-on learning, and discover potential career paths.

During this week-long program, students participate in interactive sessions led by FSC faculty, exploring health sciences, business, education, and STEM. Morning and afternoon sessions offer real-world applications and deeper insights into their interests.

Beyond academics, students will tour campus, connect with current students, and gain valuable knowledge to confidently navigate their college journey. Lunch and snacks provided.

Session Overview

Hands-On Biology Exploration

Students will step outside the classroom to collect soil samples, then analyze their findings in the lab like professional researchers. This hands-on session fosters curiosity, critical thinking, and problem-solving while introducing environmental science, microbiology, and lab-based research.

Health Science in Action

Students will explore healthcare careers—from nursing to exercise science—before tackling a high-energy escape room simulation, solving real-world medical challenges. This interactive session offers insight into patient care, clinical problem-solving, and health sciences.

The Science of Movement

Led by FSC’s Physical Therapy faculty, students will explore biomechanics and sports medicine using cutting-edge DARI motion capture technology. Activities include rehabilitation exercises, injury prevention, and an anatomy lab tour.

Unlock the Power of Programming

No experience required—just curiosity! Students will write their first lines of Python, explore problem-solving, and discover how coding powers industries like business, science, and entertainment. Topics include app development, data science, cybersecurity, and game design.

The Art of Teaching & Learning

Students will engage in the foundations of effective teaching, from storytelling techniques to hands-on classroom activities. They’ll lead a read-aloud session and design an erupting volcano experiment, learning how educators inspire curiosity and learning.

Business Career Exploration

Students will gain insight into diverse business careers while developing essential skills like resume building, networking, and interview prep. Through engaging activities, they’ll explore what employers value and build confidence for future success.

Me and My Money

This session introduces personal finance basics—budgeting, saving, and smart spending—helping students build strong money habits for long-term success. Practical and engaging, this session offers tools they can use right away.

Mastering Research - The College Library Experience

Students will navigate an academic library, participate in a scavenger hunt, and explore rare archives. This session develops critical research skills, giving students a head start on college-level coursework.

Campus Tour & College Prep

Students will also take a guided tour of Florida Southern's campus, experiencing firsthand what college life is like. They’ll be able to interact with current students and admissions staff, ask questions about the college search process, and gain valuable insights to help them prepare for their future.
