About the Sports Communication and Marketing Major

The business of sports does not stop when the final whistle blows. Somebody has to cover it, market it, broadcast it, and build the brand around it. Someone needs to understand both the communication and business sides.

FSC’s BS in Sports Communication and Marketing is an interdisciplinary degree that blends coursework in communication, business, and sports marketing to prepare students for the dynamic industry of sports. You will gain insights into public relations, journalism, and marketing practices specific to the sports industry, while building hands-on experience in digital media production through sports-related projects. Graduates pursue careers in sports broadcasting, sports management, sports information, marketing, and public relations at organizations across the sports industry.

FSC’s Sports Communication and Marketing curriculum combines a strong academic foundation with hands-on, resume-building experience designed to prepare students for success in the competitive sports industry. Through coursework spanning communication, business, marketing, and sports-specific disciplines, students develop the versatile skills and industry knowledge employers value—opening the door to a wide range of careers across the sports world.

All students complete a shared academic core covering media writing, media in sport, marketing principles, marketing research, sport marketing, management of sport, international sport, microeconomics, and applied statistics and analytics for business. A communication internship is required as part of the degree.

Students then choose one of two communication tracks based on their career direction:

Track One: Advertising and Public Relations

For students drawn to brand management, digital strategy, and the creative side of sports marketing. Coursework covers principles of advertising and PR, public relations writing, and social media strategies.

Track Two: Journalism

For students drawn to reporting, broadcasting, podcasting, and covering the sport itself. Coursework covers news reporting and feature writing, introduction to broadcast journalism, and online media.

The BS in Sports Communication and Marketing is a 124-credit-hour degree with 58 hours of major requirements.

Throughout the program, you’ll gain hands-on experience creating content across studio production and online media while building the portfolio employers and broadcast organizations look for when hiring. From concept to final product, you’ll develop the technical skills, creative expertise, and real-world experience to stand out in today’s competitive media industry.

Sports Marketing and Public Relations

Build the brand. Manage the message. Drive the campaign. FSC’s Advertising and PR track develops the strategic communication, digital marketing, and brand management skills sought by sports marketing agencies, professional franchises, and corporate sponsors.

Sports Information and Athletic Communications

Sports information directors, media relations coordinators, and digital content producers are essential at every level of sport, from college athletic departments to professional franchises. FSC’s hands-on experience with FSC Athletic Communications gives students a direct pathway into this competitive field.

Sports Management and Business

The business side of sports—including contracts, operations, venue management, partnerships, and sponsorships—requires the same blend of communication and business knowledge that FSC’s curriculum delivers. Many Sports Communication and Marketing graduates pursue careers or graduate study in sports management and sports business.
