On campus, two schools provide additional hands-on opportunities right outside your classroom door. The Early Childhood Learning Lab has served the community for more than 50 years, and the Roberts Academy is a specialized school for children with dyslexia and other reading difficulties. Both are located on the FSC campus, giving Secondary Education students a unique setting to observe, practice, and reflect alongside expert faculty before stepping into their own classroom.

Frequently Asked Questions

Florida requires a bachelor's degree from a state-approved teacher education program and passing scores on the Florida Teacher Certification Examinations. FSC's Secondary Education programs satisfy both requirements and qualify graduates for professional certification in their subject area for grades 6-12.

FSC offers five subject-area tracks: Biology, English Literature, English Writing, Mathematics, and Social Sciences. Each prepares you for Florida teacher certification in that subject area at the middle and high school level (grades 6-12).

Yes, a few. Beyond standard tuition, education students should budget for some program-specific items: a School of Education clinical experience polo shirt ($30), Education Technology fee ($75), a Polk County Public Schools background clearance and ID badge ($80), and the Florida Teacher Certification Examinations (FTCE), which include the General Knowledge Test ($130), the Professional Educator Test ($150), and the Subject Area Exam ($150). Your advisor can walk you through the full list and the timing of each.

One hundred percent of FSC Secondary Education graduates pass Florida's state teacher certification exams — a result of rigorous academic preparation, expert faculty mentorship, and extensive clinical experience before graduation.

Clinical placements begin in your first semester and continue through your final student teaching internship. You will gain experience across multiple grade levels and school environments — including FSC's on-campus schools and local classrooms through the Polk County Public Schools partnership — before you ever step into your own classroom alone.

At FSC, every course is taught by faculty, not graduate assistants, each with extensive classroom and administrative experience. Small class sizes mean faculty know your strengths and your goals. You will graduate having practiced across multiple clinical settings, passed state certification exams, and earned your degree from a Florida DOE-approved program with a 100% certification pass rate.

Yes. FSC's 4+1 Master of Education in Transformational Curriculum and Instruction allows Secondary Education students to earn both a bachelor's and a master's degree in just five years — entering the workforce with advanced credentials and eligibility for master's-level teacher compensation.
