Applied Mathematics and Statistics is an interdisciplinary field, drawing on mathematical and statistical models to advance understanding across biology, medicine, chemistry, physics, engineering, business, economics, and more. FSC's curriculum is specifically formulated to serve as a solid foundation on which to build a career, combining general modeling and analytic skills that apply broadly with specialized coursework in your chosen track.

Core topics include probability theory, regression analysis, financial mathematics, risk assessment, experimental design, complex analysis, differential equations, biostatistics, and the history of mathematics. Up-to-date computer laboratories support hands-on learning throughout the program, and FSC's low student-faculty ratio means you will have access to independent study opportunities on any mathematical topic that interests you.

Spotlight: MAT 4442 Probability and Statistics

In MAT 4442, you will study concepts including random variables, discrete and continuous distributions, sampling estimation, and confidence intervals, building the statistical foundation that applied mathematicians rely on across every industry.

FSC's program also includes comprehensive credential preparation, ensuring you are well equipped for certifications and professional qualifications needed in your chosen career path.

Every student in Applied Mathematics and Statistics chooses a field of study that focuses their degree on a specific career direction. Each track builds general modeling and analytic skills alongside discipline-specific expertise.

Actuarial Foundations

Through rigorous coursework in probability theory, financial mathematics, and risk assessment, you will learn to analyze and manage financial risks for insurance companies and other institutions. Graduates are prepared for actuarial certification and careers in risk management.

Business

With a focus on business applications, you will leverage mathematical and statistical tools to address real-world challenges in the corporate world, analyzing financial data, developing predictive models for market trends, and optimizing business processes. This track prepares graduates for roles in finance, consulting, and strategic decision making.

STEM

Through specialized coursework in probability, regression analysis, and experimental design, you will gain a comprehensive understanding of statistical methods and their applications across engineering, data science, and the sciences. Graduates excel at extracting meaningful insights from data and applying evidence-based decision making in technically demanding fields.

Core areas of study include:

  • Probability theory and statistics
  • Financial mathematics
  • Risk assessment and management
  • Regression analysis and experimental design
  • Complex analysis and differential equations
  • Biostatistics
  • Coding theory and graph theory

Applied Mathematics and Statistics students at FSC begin their journey together. All first-year students are placed in a learning community with fellow math majors, a structured environment designed to help students persist in their studies through problem-based, integrative, and collaborative learning. These early relationships often become the foundation for research partnerships, study groups, and friendships that last well beyond graduation.

Outside the classroom, the Math Club hosts several events each semester for math majors and students interested in mathematics, including game nights, ice cream socials, pizza reviews, and other activities that provide opportunities to hang out and study together.

Student Voices

Hear from Mocs discovering the power and reach of applied mathematics at Florida Southern.

"Coming from a small town but spending much of my time in the city as a kid, I found it abhorrent that there could exist such schools that force their students to shed their identity and conform to the chaos of large classes. That is why I'm infinitely grateful for the model of learning that Florida Southern uses. It was this very model that allowed me to come to love and appreciate mathematics in a personalized, one-on-one setting."

Robert McLaughlin

"I'm an Applied Mathematics major because I get to learn how math is in everything! Nothing is untouched by any form of math, and we see it in logical perfection."

Ansleigh Russell

"Intertwining so many different fields felt like giving meaning to all of the classes that I've taken. The goal wasn't just to get a grade but to accomplish something in the real world while also exploring a new research opportunity!"
