Meet Our Scholars

Peter Edgar

Peter Edgar

Full-ride scholarships are awarded to promising students to alleviate the stresses of having to finance their education — allowing them to focus on their studies. And Peter didn’t waste a moment. He immersed himself completely, availing himself of the many opportunities our community offers. Along with triple-majoring in English, Spanish, and Communication, Peter interned at a local non-profit news outlet, participated in organizations such as the Multicultural Student Council and the Harry Potter Club, and served as Editor-in-Chief of The Southern, our student-run newspaper.

“The Hollingsworth Scholarship was like a machete that cleared a path forward for me through a jungle of financial and administrative obstacles to attending college. Instead of having to take out loans and work several jobs, I was able to devote myself to activities and student organizations that I was passionate about.”

Peter is now at the University of Alabama, pursuing a Masters of Fine Arts in Creative Writing, Poetry.

“Without the Hollingsworth, I couldn’t have been able to say yes to the many other opportunities that Florida Southern presented to me once I arrived, and I couldn’t have enrolled in graduate school with the financial burden of an undergraduate degree.”

About the Hollingsworth Scholarship

The Hollingsworth Scholars program is Florida Southern’s premier scholarship program and is available exclusively to students whose academic accomplishments demonstrate superior intellect, unwavering character, and robust ambition. Funded through the generosity of Bernie Little, Jr., ’90 and his wife, Mary Jane Hunt, the Hollingsworth Scholars Program was created to provide the most dedicated and talented students with the opportunity to study at one of the nation’s best private colleges, the freedom to do so as fully dedicated scholars, and the opportunity to explore his or her leadership potential through collaboration with our college president, Dr. Anne Kerr, who serves as advisor to the Hollingsworth Scholars Program. Recognizing some of the nation’s top students, these coveted awards cover the full cost of tuition and fees, room, meals, and books for four years, and provide a travel stipend to underwrite the cost of an international travel-study experience. Awarded to first-year students and renewable each year, these scholarships are valued at more than $170,000 over four years.

The Hollingsworth Scholarship is highly competitive. A committee composed of distinguished faculty will interview each finalist, selecting students based on their academic promise, leadership potential, character, and future goals.
