Military and Veteran Benefits

Florida Southern College is proud to be recognized as a military friendly school, and we are here to help service members, veterans, and eligible dependents make the most of their education benefits.

Benefits We Accept

Florida Southern College accepts the following VA education benefits:

  • Ch. 33, Post-9/11 GI Bill
  • Ch. 30, Montgomery GI Bill
  • Ch. 1606, Montgomery GI Bill Selected Reserve
  • Ch. 35, Survivors' and Dependents' Educational Assistance (DEA)
  • Ch. 31, Veteran Readiness and Employment (VR&E)

We also accept military Tuition Assistance for active-duty service members. See Tuition Assistance below.

How to Apply for Your Benefits

You apply for VA benefits directly with the VA at benefits.va.gov, not through Florida Southern. Before you enroll, we encourage you to speak with the Education Services Officer (ESO) or counselor for your branch of service.

If you need help getting started, call the VA Educational Benefits Hotline at 888-442-4551. Its counselors specialize in education benefits.

How Your Benefits Are Paid

How your benefit reaches you depends on which one you use.

Post-9/11 GI Bill (Ch. 33): Tuition and fees are paid directly to the College and appear on your tuition statement in the FSC Portal as "Anticipated VA Payment." The amount is based on the VA's yearly cap (August through July), your percentage of entitlement, and your charges after any scholarships or aid applied to tuition. Any housing allowance or book stipend is paid directly to you. See current Post-9/11 GI Bill rates.

Veteran Readiness and Employment (Ch. 31): Tuition and fees are paid directly to the College. Any monthly subsistence allowance is paid directly to you.

Montgomery GI Bill (Ch. 30 and 1606) and DEA (Ch. 35): These benefits are paid to you monthly, not to the College. The VA sets the amount, generally based on the number of hours you're enrolled. Partial months are paid at a reduced rate.

Adding Your Benefits to Your Tuition Statement

VA benefits do not appear on your financial aid award letter. To have them reflected on your tuition statement in the FSC Portal, we need a current Certificate of Eligibility (COE).

The VA mails you a COE once your benefits are activated, for example after a parent transfers benefits to you or after you apply as a veteran. It usually arrives about a month after you apply online. Once you receive it, send us a copy and we'll add your benefits to your statement.

Tuition Assistance for Active-Duty Service Members

Tuition Assistance (TA) helps active-duty service members pay for college. To learn what you're eligible for, contact your Education Services Officer.

If you stop attending, Florida Southern returns unearned TA funds on a proportional basis through at least the 60% point of the period the funds covered. The schedule below is based on a 100-day term.

Days Completed TA Returned
Days 1–3 100%
Days 4–10 90%
Days 11–25 50%
Days 26–50 25%
Days 51–60 (60% of course completed) 12%
Day 61 and beyond None

If you stop attending because of a military service obligation, we'll work with you on a solution that doesn't leave you with debt for the returned portion.

Our Commitment to You

Florida Southern does not use high-pressure recruitment tactics. We will not make three or more unsolicited contacts by phone, email, or in person, and we do not recruit and register students on the same day to secure enrollment.
