Florida Southern College art history students were recently featured on Bay News 9 for their work on Here & Now: FSC Student Perspectives on the Permanent Collection, an exhibition at The Ashley Gibson Barnett Museum of Art.

Created by students in the Spring 2026 Contemporary Art History course, the exhibition brings together works added to the museum’s permanent collection since 2000. Students wrote new interpretive labels for the selected pieces, using each one to make an argument about why the artwork remains relevant today.

The exhibition features work by prominent contemporary artists including Alex Katz, Hunt Slonem, Ed Ruscha, Damien Hirst, William Wegman, and Miriam Schapiro. Through their interpretations, the students encourage visitors to see familiar works differently and consider how art continues to respond to the world around us.

Bay News 9 reporter Roy De Jesus visited the museum to learn more about the exhibition and the students’ curatorial work.
