The Pillars of Fraternity and Sorority Life

Every chapter is different, but our whole community shares the same foundation.

Academic Excellence

Scholarship comes first. Chapters encourage and support strong academic achievement, with study hours, accountability, and recognition built into membership.

Leadership

Everyone leads. Whether you hold an office, chair a committee, or take charge of an event, you'll build real leadership experience you carry into your career.

Frequently Asked Questions

Every chapter has dues that fund social events, programming, and chapter operations, as well as resources from each organization's national headquarters. Costs vary by chapter, and some dues are all-inclusive while others are not. Reach out to individual chapters to learn more about their specific costs.

It varies by chapter, but most hold weekly meetings along with events planned in advance throughout the year. Plenty of members balance academics, jobs, internships, and other involvement alongside their chapter, time management is the key, and it's a skill you'll build along the way.

Every chapter is different, so it's worth doing your research. A few good questions to ask:

  • What values does this organization promote?
  • How will membership fit with my academics?
  • What's expected of members?
  • What leadership opportunities are available, as both a new and active member?
  • Does the chapter do hands-on community service, and how often?
  • What are the costs, and how do they differ for new members?
  • What's the time commitment?

Florida Southern does not tolerate hazing in any form, by any student, organization, or team. Hazing has no place in our fraternity and sorority community, and our chapters are held to that standard. FSC complies fully with Florida's anti-hazing law, including Andrew's Law.

Fraternity and sorority life offers things you may not find elsewhere on campus: leadership skills, academic support and achievement, and hands-on philanthropic opportunities. These are values-based organizations, and members are expected to uphold the values their founders established. Above all, membership offers a sense of belonging, a home away from home, and friendships that last a lifetime.

Joining a chapter is a memorable experience, and many students lean on family for support while they decide. You can help by encouraging your student to research the chapters, ask questions, and think through the financial and time commitments before joining. Sometimes the most valuable thing you can offer is simply being an active listener as they weigh the pros and cons. If you have questions or want to learn more about supporting your student, reach out to the Coordinator of Fraternity and Sorority Life.
