The study of matter and how it’s created and manipulated makes chemistry one our most fascinating and fast-paced majors.
Your degree in Chemistry will encompass five key areas of chemistry – organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, analytical chemistry, and biochemistry – as well as mathematics and physics. Additionally, you can choose to deepen your knowledge through concentrations in forensic or environmental chemistry, preparing you for a career in one of these areas.
ACS-approved programs offer a broad-based and rigorous chemistry education that gives chemistry students intellectual, experimental, and communication skills to become effective scientific professionals.
During your collaborative chemistry research with chemistry faculty, you have the opportunity to publish, and present your own original chemistry research at regional and national conferences.
Our chemistry graduates are accepted into the nation’s top medical, dental, and veterinary schools such as, Duke, University of Miami, University of Pennsylvania, and Auburn.
Our research labs grant you a hands-on experience using the latest state-of-the-art instrumentation.
Through affiliations with professional organizations such as the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and American Chemical Society, as well as a chapter of Gamma Sigma Epsilon, FSC's chemistry honor society, you'll get connected with scientists from around the world. Our students present their research findings at national meetings and publish their research in high-impact journals. Our chemistry students have also conducted research at Brookhaven National Laboratory and Stanford’s Summer Research Program in the Biomedical Sciences.

In CHE 2231 Organic Chemistry, you’ll study structure, functional groups, chemical reactions, mechanisms, and more of carbon compound. In order to better explore the material, you’ll draw, visualize and describe molecular features, interactions of organic compounds and applications of kinetics and thermodynamics.

I challenge students to build their own connections between the very small (molecular and nanoscale principles) and the very large (macroscopic phenomena) through active hands-on and brains-on experiences that bridge the chemistry classroom and the chemistry laboratory. These connections extend from our chemistry coursework to the diverse topics and fields that fascinate our students, and it is these interconnections that will lead to breakthroughs, both big and small, that will continue to change and improve the world.
The Chemistry department sponsors a chapter of Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society, which has received national recognition for their activities and outreach to the local community. We also host a chapter of Gamma Sigma Epsilon, the national honor society for chemistry.
Located on the second floor of the Polk Science building, these labs consist of three equally sized laboratories equipped with everything you will need to safely explore chemistry and its applications. Including, but not limited to: fume hoods, burners, sinks, scales, centrifuges, glassware, and lab computers.
Due to challenges associated with the pandemic, we have waived the requirement to submit a recommendation letter.
