My teaching philosophy is based in the Adult Learning Theory or Andragogy (Malcolm Knowles, 1984). This theory assumes that adult learners need to be involved in their own learning and that adult learners learn not only from successes but also mistakes. My goal for my students is that they learn not only what they need to know to be successful but also the skills they need to be successful life long learners.
Dr Magee is an assistant professor of pediatric nursing in the School of Nursing and Health Sciences and the Education Coordinator of the Carol Jenkins Barnett Center for Early Learning and Health. She received her BSN from DePauw University in Indiana, her MSN from Indiana University and her PhD from Boston College. She completed a post doctoral fellowship in nursing research and was an Erickson Fellow in Child Development both from the University of Illinois at Chicago. In her faculty role at SNHS, she teaches in the MSN and DNP programs. In her role at the Carol Jenkins Barnett Center for Early Learning and Health, Dr Magee coordinates education initiatives to identify and intervene in health-related issues in early childhood to improve childhood learning and health. Dr Magee has been teaching full time at the graduate level since 2004 and has held positions from instructor to program director to associate dean and has received private grants and federal funding for her research on infant colic and crying. Her current research interest is in the connections among health, illness and academic achievement in children.
In addition to her academic work, Dr Magee has been a pediatric nurse practitioner since 1991 and has worked with well and sick children in both urban and suburban communities. She particular expertise in developmental disabilities, specifically Autism Spectrum Disorder.
