Florida Southern College’s Sport Business Institute, part of the Barney Barnett School of Business and Free Enterprise, will be hosting a guest lecturer at 4 p.m. on November 3.
Veteran National Basketball Association (NBA) coach and analyst Stan Van Gundy will share his thoughts on the business of sports with students from across several disciplines.
The Sport Business Institute explores the academic side of sports, and provides a top-tier education in the sports business arena for undergraduate students. The program hosts case competitions, creates living case studies, and provides interdisciplinary events on campus in the sport business, management, and communication fields. Van Gundy will be the inaugural guest speaker.
Van Gundy is a nationally recognized television sports broadcaster and former NBA coach. Van Gundy brings a 40-year coaching career that encompasses all NCAA levels and a 13-year NBA tenure, including stops with the Miami Heat, Orlando Magic, Detroit Pistons, and most recently the New Orleans Pelicans. His 2008-09 Magic squad advanced as far as the NBA Finals.
Van Gundy is a highly popular broadcaster for the TNT network, where he serves as a color analyst and has a flair for communicating basketball concepts to both the novice and expert alike. His sports acumen has translated to an outstanding comprehension of sports as business.
Van Gundy will address a myriad of topics but will focus on three key questions:
- How do analytics drive efficiency in Sports and Business
- Should leaders adapt to their personnel, or should personnel adapt to the leadership – Lessons learned during a 40-year coaching career
- Networking vs. Fandom – How do young professionals position themselves for a career in Sports Business
A student-led question and answer session will follow the presentation.
