On September 11, 2001, men and women stepped into their offices, families settled in for their flights, and children assembled in their classrooms with no notion that the day's events would forever change their world. The images of destruction wrought upon the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and the wreckage in Shanksville, PA are forever impressed upon our hearts. Yet, even in the midst of horrendous acts of terror, Americans came together for the common good. Countless heroes rushed in to serve in the wake of 9/11. Thousands gave their lives to save the lives of others. The 13 men and women who selflessly laid their lives on the line to evacuate the vulnerable in Afghanistan continued the fight for freedom. America is the land of the free because of the Military, Firefighters, Police, and EMS Personnel who model the American spirit of bravery and sacrifice. We are forever indebted to their sacrifice for our freedom. We will not forget. In honor of our American Heroes, let us follow in their example of service.
