Spring Semester Update, Tuition, Room & Board Freeze

Oct 22, 2020

by FSC Staff

Dear Students and Parents,

October 22, 2020

This semester has been an historic learning experience for our campus community. I am gratified that our on-campus students, faculty, and staff have embraced protocols to keep us as healthy as possible during this pandemic. I am also tremendously grateful for the dedication and patience of our students who are remote learners this term.

Based on all that we have learned this semester about how to manage this pandemic, the Board of Trustees approved the return of all students for spring semester who wish to live in campus housing.

Although our density will not be low enough to permit one student per room, it will be within an acceptable range for us to return students who wish to be here, with the understanding that the majority of students will have a roommate.

Students who wish to be remote learners or commuter students may make those choices for spring semester. The deadline for this selection will be during registration for spring classes, which runs November 2nd to 12th.

Earlier this semester the College promised an update about our plans on October 26th. Dr. Susan Freeman, Vice President of Student Affairs, has shared more details HERE about housing assignments, health protocols, and more, including answers to frequently asked questions.

Of course, there are more than three months between today and the first day of the spring semester. It is possible that pandemic conditions could deteriorate between now and then. Should updates to this plan be required, we will share changes as soon as possible.

Freezing Tuition, Room and Board

The Board of Trustees also voted to freeze current rates for undergraduate day program tuition, room, and board for next year. I wanted to share this news with you now since I know many of our families are working hard during the pandemic to adjust their financial plans.

Despite increased costs to the College because of the pandemic, Trustees voted to hold tuition stable to help our students and families manage the pandemic’s economic impact.

COVID-19 Status Report

Our fall semester has been unique, and the College is progressing well. We are seven weeks into our 12-week period of on-campus instruction.

Our low-density model — along with the other elements of our protocol including rapid-response PCR testing for symptomatic students as well as our random testing program; contact tracing; quarantine and isolation procedures; masks; temperature checks; classroom and campus common space cleaning; social distancing;  and much more — has resulted in an enviable safety record.

To date, we have had 28 positive cases among residential students, 22 among commuter students, and three among faculty and staff. As of today, to our knowledge, no students or faculty have been hospitalized. Sadly, this summer a beloved staff member did pass away from COVID.

Please see College updates on its COVID-19 online dashboard.

Gratitude and Appreciation

Florida Southern College is fortunate to have a responsible student body and dedicated faculty and staff. Students have accepted the rigorous health procedures, and I am proud of how they are working hard to keep each other healthy.

FSC’s student body is composed of world-class talent in many areas. Even though we are experiencing an unprecedented time of concern during the pandemic — and the extreme polarization of political opinions in our nation — I am optimistic that our world will be advantaged through the excellent contributions our graduates will make in society.

They will truly achieve our mission of making a positive and consequential impact in the world.

Thank you for your continuing support of the Florida Southern College community.

With kindest regards,

Anne B. Kerr, Ph.D.
