Florida Southern College’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Council met via Zoom on November 13 to discuss the progress of work in the fall semester and the outcomes it expects to deliver.
Each of the Council’s seven committees (Athletics, Chaplain’s Office/Religious Life, Curriculum, Enrollment Management, Faculty and Staff Diversity, Safety and Student Services, and Student Life) reported about their meetings and progress this fall. The committees have met with students, faculty, and staff to listen to ideas, explore plans and to address areas of strength and improvement. A few committees also sent out surveys to collect data.
The goal is to develop recommendations to grow and improve diversity, equity, and inclusion on campus. Those recommendations are expected in early 2021.
“The important and meaningful recommendations that are approved by this Council will be submitted to the FSC Board of Trustees to be considered for incorporation into the College’s new strategic plan,” President Anne B. Kerr said. “The Council’s work will help direct how the College continues and expands its efforts to make our campus a model for diversity and inclusion.”
Additionally, the Council heard initial details about results of a survey this fall asking students, faculty, and staff to share their views about diversity, equity, and inclusion on campus. More than 500 students and 200 faculty and staff members responded to the survey.
A full presentation about the results will be given at an upcoming joint meeting of the Council and members of the Council’s committees. The Council is expected to meet again in mid-December.
