A message to our Florida Southern community from President Anne Kerr

June 2, 2020

As I shared in my message yesterday about the death of Mr. George Floyd, our nation must urgently address social injustice more effectively.

The values needed to guide this urgent work are the same values that form the Cornerstone of our College, and I am committed to bringing our values of respect, inclusion, and equality to life in meaningful ways.

As our next step, I will be assembling the College’s Diversity Task Force to develop recommendations about how we can contribute to listening, understanding, and healing on campus, in our community, and beyond. I am honored that FSC Trustee Evett Simmons will chair this initiative.

Evett is an alumna, attorney, author, and a national leader and advocate for diversity initiatives. She is also the benefactor for our Simmons Multicultural Center, and shares my deep commitment to social justice.

Although the campus is mostly closed this summer due to the coronavirus, I will meet immediately with the Diversity Task Force via ZOOM to begin forming recommendations, developing strategies, and determining actions that will ensure the tenets of our Cornerstone are fully in place to benefit all who are in our community. This work will continue with vital input from students, faculty, and staff when they return to campus in the fall.

We will focus on exploring ways we can present expanded perspectives of social justice to our students and community and will include conversations with key community leaders about how we can become voices and examples for positive change.

As we begin this initiative, I am inspired by the Scriptures in Psalm 34:14 and Matthew 5:9 that encourage us to seek peace.

God calls on us to engage in the hard work of being peacemakers. Please be assured that FSC will effectively and vigorously pursue peace as proponents and agents of social justice and equality in our society.

By doing so, I pray that our work together in these perilous times will chart a path toward a new level of peace and equality and that Florida Southern will be a beacon of hope in our community.
