World Lacrosse, the international governing body for the sport of lacrosse, has appointed Florida Southern College’s Dr. Katherine Loh to its new Diversity and Opportunity Commission. She is one of four December appointees to the commission, which will form part of a global Commission for World Lacrosse, participating in strategic and policy development.
The global initiative also will consist of a new Women in Sport Commission and a new Ethics Commission. All three commissions are expected to begin their work in January 2021.
Dr. Loh is an assistant professor of communication at Florida Southern, and is in her second year as FSC’s Faculty Athletics Representative. She also serves as Secretary-General of the Pan-American Lacrosse Association (PALA). In addition to Dr. Loh’s multifaceted work with PALA — which in 2019 included planning and staging the first-ever PALA Women’s Championship — she is a member of the Board of Directors of the Peru Lacrosse Association.
A 1993 graduate of the College of Notre Dame of Maryland, Dr. Loh received her M.A. at George Mason University in 1995, and her Ph.D. from American University in 2003. She has more than 20 years of experience in higher education, with a teaching and research focus on sports diplomacy, intercultural communication, strategic communication and conflict resolution.
“As our international federation continues to grow, it is important we find ways to bring new voices and fresh thinking into our organization,” said World Lacrosse President Sue Redfern, “particularly as we look to meet the opportunities and challenges that are before us. The creation of these new commissions and the initial phase of appointments reflect our commitment to embracing best practices among international federations while expanding the reach, impact and accessibility of lacrosse worldwide.”
As appropriate, the Diversity and Opportunity Commission will take the lead for specific projects and communications with an aim of positioning World Lacrosse as a champion for inclusion and diversity across all its activities.
New commission will participate in strategic and policy development.
