Dr. Eskin at the Red Door.
Apr 18, 2018
During Women’s History Month, students from Dr. Catherine Eskin’s “Writing About Feminist Humor” classes participated in events with The Red Tent Initiative (RTI), a local organization that takes a holistic approach to advocating for survivors of abuse and exploitation.
Each Sunday (March 4, 11, 18 and 25), students read pieces of feminist humor (from Lena Dunham to Amy Schumer to Tina Fey) to a crowd of supporters at the Red Door Wine Market (located across the street from the Polk Museum of Art). The crowd was mixed and enthusiastic and the students enjoyed the opportunity to interact with the community.
First year graphic design major Katie Osiensky explained: “I was nervous about speaking in front of people, but the group at the Red Door for RTI were welcoming and supportive. I couldn’t have asked for a better audience. And they laughed at the jokes!”
On the final day of Women’s History Month and the eve of Sexual Assault Awareness Month (March 31st), RTI hosted fund- and awareness-raising events: a 5k and Fun Run on Lake Hollingsworth in the morning and a “Collective” (artists and survivors come together to share stories of pain and triumph through visual art, song, dance, and spoken word). FSC students were helping at the 5k and learning more about the organization and what it does for local community members.
