Florida Southern College’s new Esports program is a welcome fulfillment of interest for many of its students. The arena is home to dozens of modern gaming computers open to anyone signed up for access. Available on the computers are a plethora of games. League of Legends, Hearthstone, Rocket League, Overwatch, Fortnite, Counter-Strike, and many others are pre-installed for students to play casually with friends, or practice with their competitive varsity and junior varsity on-campus teams.

"For many, time with the Esports program is time to maintain friendships, to work and grow as a team, and to share their passion about a common interest." - Alex Tipaldo '19.

The arena also contains a streaming setup for students to broadcast their gameplay to friends, alumni, and fellow schools - a great way to extend the reach of FSC’s gaming initiative. The official Florida Southern Twitch channel hosts featured student streamers and official competitive games to publicize the high level of extracurricular involvement.

However, the arena is not an unmonitored wasteland for students to mess around and slack off in. Access is cut off at 1 a.m. every night to make sure students get a healthy amount of sleep. The arena is made private for hours at a time during varsity team practice to give official Esports team members sufficient peace and space to improve their skills and teamwork.

"Esports is more than just playing video games. It's about people coming together with a common interest and forming a bond. I think it's already done great things for this school, and we're excited to see where it will go." Says Matthew Traino '21, Esports Media Team Member and one of the CS:GO junior varsity team players.

Additionally, the Florida Southern Esports program breaks traditional stereotypes of gamers by promoting and maintaining a diverse environment. Students of all shapes, sizes, races, genders, and economic situations gather together in the arena with the common interest of playing games. Some play to relax after a long day of working and studying for school. Others are serious competitors at all times, using their time in the arena to constantly hone in on their highest possible level of achievement.

For many, time with the Esports program is time to maintain friendships, to work and grow as a team, and to share their passion about a common interest. No matter the purpose, Florida Southern’s Esports program is a welcome change of pace and a great addition to the school’s already flourishing culture.
