Musical Theatre Majors on Performing Abroad

Aug 22, 2016

by Dr. Christianne Roll
Assistant Professor of Musical Theatre

Musical Theatre is truly an American art form, thanks to innovative artists from the turn of the 20th century right up to today’s creators of Hamilton. Although the musical theatre curriculum at FSC is inspired by American musicals, we also pay attention to advances in musical theatre from around the world so that our students will be ready to work upon graduation.

This month, six FSC students will not only be learning about musical theatre from around the globe, they also will be creating it. From audition videos, these students were selected to perform in an international showcase in Norway as part of the Musical Theatre Educator’s Association conference. A total of twenty-two students from the USA, Italy, Australia, Thailand, Denmark, and Norway will rehearse with international directors to prepare for the showcase. The performance will be held on August 27th at 7:30pm (1:30pm EST) at Oslo’s Teaterkjelleren in front of a panel of European casting directors.

“Traveling to Norway will present a plethora of opportunities and I can't wait to meet people from around the world that all share the same passion for the arts that I do! ”
Justin Baret ‘18

With six students in the showcase, FSC will be represented by more performers than any other program. Needless to say, I am one proud professor! And I also get to attend the conference to present a master class on my favorite topic, “Female Belting.” Here is what the students have to say about this adventure:

It still hasn't hit me that I get to travel out of the country to showcase the skills that I have learned and have been training for at FSC. – Martina Long ‘18

We'll be performing with people from all over the world and to top that, casting directors from other countries will be at our performance— imagine being cast in a show in Germany or Norway!  - Jessica Kronenberger ‘17

I am excited to see how musical theatre works in different cultures! – Rachael Lord ‘18

Our professors train us to be professionals. The amount of growth I’ve seen in myself and my peers is incredible. I know this showcase is something we can all look back on years from now and be proud of, and I hope to gain a new appreciation for this art and to come back excited about everything I still have to learn at FSC. - Molly Garrett ‘18

Traveling to Norway will present a plethora of opportunities and I can't wait to meet people from around the world that all share the same passion for the arts that I do! - Justin Baret ‘18

For my first time going to another country to be an adventure involving musical theatre is the most rewarding experience I could ever ask for! Thanks to my amazing professors at FSC I have been provided the tools to be selected for this trip. FSC keeps opening doors I never thought I'd be able to reach! - Sierra Bores ‘19

If you want to stay up to date with our trip, check out FSC’s social media from August 24th – 28th for photos and live videos of the conference. And be sure to check out my blog next month that will recap our trip.
