The latest developments in scholars’ ongoing search for a clearer historical portrait of Jesus will be the subject of the 2016 Biblical Symposium at Florida Southern College.

The symposium, “Reading Jesus Between the Lines: Recent Research on the Gospels and the Quest of the Historical Jesus,” will be held from 9:15 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., Thursday, April 14, in the Hollis Room on the FSC campus. The event, sponsored by the Department of Religion and Philosophy at FSC, is free and open to the public. Lunch will be served at a cost of $10 per person.

Speakers and panelists for the symposium include three scholars renowned for their research on the New Testament Gospels and Christian origins. They are:

  • Dr. John Dominic Crossan, emeritus professor of religious studies at DePaul University; author of numerous books, including Jesus: A Revolutionary Biography; and founding member of the Jesus Seminar, a controversial organization of biblical scholars.
  • Dr. Dennis R. MacDonald, professor of New Testament and Christian origins at Claremont School of Theology and director of the Institute for Antiquity and Christianity at Claremont Graduate Union, and author of numerous books, including The Homeric Epics and the Gospel of Mark.
  • Dr. Mark Allan Powell, professor of New Testament at Trinity Lutheran Seminary, and author of the textbook Introducing the New Testament, among other books.
