Expressing a desire to return generosity that was shown to him, one of Florida Southern College’s most distinguished alumni has established a $1 million endowed scholarship for talented students who otherwise would not be able to afford college.

Attorney and retired insurance executive Gordon W. (“G.W.”) Jacobs of Sarasota and his wife, Shelia, have given the gift to benefit students in the Barney Barnett School of Business and Free Enterprise with a demonstrated financial need whose parents are not able to cover the costs of tuition and room and board.

Mr. Jacobs said he is grateful to donors to the College who enabled him to receive a scholarship when he was a student at FSC and wants to do the same for future students.

“Whatever career success I have had is attributable to those fine people who helped me get scholarship aid. Shelia and I are proud that we have achieved the means to give this endowment to Florida Southern so that every year some deserving young person will be presented with an opportunity to get a degree otherwise out of reach,” he said. “We know that Florida Southern and its excellent administrators and faculty will make sure the education is complete, with emphasis on social and spiritual values that will serve them and humanity well as they graduate and move into our challenging world.”

Mr. Jacobs is a summa cum laude graduate of Florida Southern and an honors graduate of the University of Florida Law School. Among his many career accomplishments, he was the supervising attorney for Florida’s Special Disability Fund, served as president and chief executive officer of FCCI Insurance Group, and is a member of Florida’s Workers Compensation Hall of Fame. He received the FSC Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award in March.  The award recognizes professional achievement, civic leadership, and a commitment to the highest ethical standards.

FSC President Anne Kerr thanked Mr. and Mrs. Jacobs for the gift.

“It is rare to see the level of extraordinary generosity demonstrated by G.W. and Shelia Jacobs. This scholarship is a tremendous addition to our student financial aid program. I know it will be repaid many times over for generations to come in the lives of the students it helps. The College, the community, and the world will be a better place as a result of this admirable gift,” she said.
