In a great example of service learning, eleven students from the FSC Department of Theatre Arts performed standards and musical theatre selections during an Afternoon of Song recital for the residents of the Estates at Carpenters retirement home in Lakeland on Oct. 29. The students performed such songs as “What a Wonderful World,” “I Feel Pretty,” and “Broadway Baby.”

Students prepared for this performance during private voice lessons with theatre department vocal instructors David Foust and Dr. Christianne Roll, and Dr. Roll served as the accompanist for the event.

The residents were very receptive to the performance, sang along with some of the familiar tunes, and asked for the students to keep singing, or at least to come back for additional recitals in the future. The students enjoyed the chance to share their love of singing and performing in the community and asked that this type of community outreach become a standard event each semester.

Participating students were (pictured left to right) Rebecca Schild, Ashlyn Gibbs, Alex Pilka, Kortney Adcock, Patience Elett, Annie Gaddis, Brianna Hill, Jonathon Timpanelli, Mister Fitzgerald, Jewel Blakeslee, and Keith Young. Dr. Roll is at far right.
