The Barney Barnett School of Business and Free Enterprise at Florida Southern College is pleased to announce the inauguration of the Institute for Accounting Excellence, which will oversee all components of the accounting program in the Barnett School.

The Institute, which will be directed by Dr. Lynn Clements, Dorotha C. Tanner Professor of Ethics in Business and Economics, was formally inaugurated at an event on Sept. 11 at Lone Palm Country Club in Lakeland.

In addition to the Master of Accountancy degree program, which includes the Becker CPA Review, the Institute for Accounting Excellence will also oversee twice-yearly continuing professional education courses, and three new initiatives:

  • The Journal of Accounting and Free Enterprise (JAFE), an academic journal dedicated to research in the area of accounting and the free market. The first issue is scheduled to be published in spring 2015.
  • The Summer Accounting Institute, a “boot camp” for non-accounting majors designed to provide them with basic accounting principles.
  • An annual conference on fraud detection and prevention, at a date to be announced.

“The Institute for Accounting Excellence will provide the best student-focused accounting education for baccalaureate and graduate students,” said FSC President Anne Kerr. “Our incomparable faculty is committed to preparing students for successful accounting careers through engaged learning that emphasizes practical research and service.”
