Publisher of Influential Florida Trend to Speak at Winter Commencement

LAKELAND (Dec. 10, 2013) – Andrew P. Corty, president and publisher of the influential Florida Trend magazine, will be the speaker at the winter commencement convocation at Florida Southern College on Saturday, Dec. 14.
The ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m. at Branscomb Auditorium on campus. Approximately 190 degrees will be awarded, including almost 70 graduate degrees in business, education, and nursing.
One of the graduating seniors will be presented the President’s Scholar medal. The medal honors a graduate whose academic standing is in the top 1 percent, who exemplifies the values of the College, and who has a demonstrated commitment to scholarship, student leadership and service.
The Senior Speaker, representing the senior class, will be Juliana Cardona Mejia, a political science major from Colombia.
Mr. Corty oversees monthly content, business operations, and digital offerings for Florida Trend. He joined the Times Publishing organization, Trend Magazines’ parent company, in 1978 as assistant to the publisher. He worked briefly at The Washington Post but returned to Florida to head marketing for the St. Petersburg Times, now the Tampa Bay Times. For 15 years he was vice chairman of Congressional Quarterly, a subsidiary of the Times until it was sold in 2009. In addition to leading Florida Trend, Mr. Corty sits on the board of directors for Times Publishing and serves as a trustee of The Poynter Institute, the not-for-profit school that owns the Times. He received his bachelor’s degree from Harvard College and his M.B.A. from Stanford Graduate School of Business.
