I will never forget how difficult the college process was for me as a first generation college student. My parents had attended university outside of the United States and it was just a totally different process. Being able to understand how that feels drives me to make sure I can help anyone going through this very important and slightly emotional process. The biggest reward is when I get to see those students walk across the stage for graduation.
I would definitely start by having a great morning stroll at Munn Park and checking out the farmer’s market with the family which includes my Australian Cattle dog, Astro. He loves to meet new people. By the afternoon, I would make my way to 801 E. Main and have some beignets with the family. Later on in the evening, I would probably head to the Silver Moon drive-in theatre and catch a film or two.
I’m really into experiential novels like House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski. It’s a bit of horror fiction, but mostly very witty satire. As for music, the spectrum is really wide, mostly because of my classical music background. I enjoy the classics like Chopin and Tchaikovsky but sometimes I just want to rap alongside Run the Jewels or scream with AC/DC, it all depends on the mood.
I taught myself how to read music. One day I bought a book for a little less than 25 cents and fixed a keyboard my friend was throwing out. By the age of 10, I knew the basics and by the age of 12, I was picking up the flute which later landed me a scholarship in college. Aside from that, many people get surprised that I am left-handed and that I can speak Spanish fluently.
Recently, I have started to get more involved with improvisational music where someone can start playing a beat on guitar or any other instrument and you just kind of join in. We’ve posted a couple of videos and some of our improvised sets are the start of some songs we are now working on. Who knows, maybe we will have enough for an album one of these days. For now, it’s just for fun.
