Joe Ligato, Ph.D.

Program Director for Master of Science in Industrial-Organizational Psychology
Assistant Professor of Industrial-Organizational Psychology

I believe that every good academic should understand the basic research that is the foundation for their field and know the applied research that has tangible, real-world implications.  I encourage my students to always be thinking about the potential real-world impact of their work at all times.  In my classes, I train students in five core areas of being a research scientist.  These five areas are: Being a Subject Matter Expert, Research Methods, Data Analysis, Data Visualization, and Written/Oral Data Communication.  I do this through: promoting a psychologically safe learning environment that allows for open knowledge-sharing, creating a feedback-seeking environment (teacher to student, student to student, and student to teacher), encourage creativity by exploring alternative hypotheses for relationships between variables, making the material relevant to students in order to foster engagement/buy-in, and by training students in critical thinking skills through the rigorous study of different types of mental and statistical models that can be used to understand and solve problems.
