Claudia Stephens Slate, Ph.D.
Professor of English

"I strive to empower students to learn not only the fundamental content of my courses but also critical thinking strategies and problem solving skills. I want my students to recognize the power of language, including the influence of their own language when it is well organized, persuasive, and grammatically correct. Also important in my classes are exposure to literature of many genres, nationalities and cultures, and discussion as a tool for inquiry and engagement."

Dr. Slate received her B.A. with honors degree from the University of Missouri-Rolla in 1976. She then earned her masters degree and Ph.D. from the University of South Florida in 1986 and 1993, respectively. Her dissertation was entitled Violation and Voice: The Incestuous Father-Daughter Relationship in Southern Literature. She began teaching at Florida Southern College in 1989.

In 2005-2010, Dr. Slate was Co-director of the African American Studies concentration, and in 2008-2010, she was Coordinator of the Implementation of SAGA (Student Awareness Generates Action).
