Lawrence Burke, M. M.
Associate Professor of Music
"It is my goal to lead students to solutions while allowing their musical creativity the room to grow. Careful guidance and providing access to the tools for success allows the student to realize their potential."
Mr. Burke has taught music at all academic levels, from Kindergarten through College. His graduate studies at the University of Michigan with Abe Torchinsky were an important part of his development as both a tubist and a musician in general. He has taught at FSC for twenty five years, and has had the opportunity to teach a wide variety of courses. In his first year at FSC, with Nat Adderley, he founded the "Child of the Sun" Jazz Festival which has presented local, national, and internationally acclaimed jazz artists to the Lakeland community. In the intervening years, Mr. Burke has also directed/coordinated chamber festivals, and for three years directed the College's Festival of Fine Arts. His experience as a presenter has been a great asset in his role as coordinator of the Music Management degree program. When he first joined the faculty at FSC, Mr. Burke also founded the Clarion Brass which has performed throughout Florida in recitals, educational programs (including "Books and Brass" - a children's literacy program), and church services. He performs regularly as principle E flat tubist with the Colorado/Western State Brass Band each summer and has been a featured soloist with the group on three different occasions. As an active freelance musician, he also performs frequently with Guy Lombardo's Royal Canadians.
