Concentration Coursework

Throughout the Master of Arts program, students may choose to extend their learning by enrolling in the Orton Gillingham Multisensory Reading Approach or STEM Concentrations courses. These courses will provide excellent professional development with strategies and techniques that will engage the students they teach and provide maximum opportunities for student growth and learning.

MAT Program Total - 42 hours

All students will begin the program in the Foundation Courses, which ensure a strong foundation in education, before entering advanced MAT-level classes.

Florida Southern College reserves the right to revise fee schedules.

Base Required Fees Cost
Tuition Per Credit Hour $430
Technology fee per semester is based on credit hours enrolled $30 to $120

Any MAT courses attempted in the fall or spring semesters before receiving the undergraduate degree will be charged at the traditional undergraduate full-time tuition rate. Graduate courses taken after the student receives their undergraduate degree will be billed at the current MAT per credit hour rate.

*Tuition will be billed prior to the beginning of each semester based on credit hours. Tuition must be paid by the first day of class.

Admission Requirements

  • Completed application (Students are encouraged to apply for admission during their junior year)
  • GPA of 3.0+ overall (cumulative)
  • Must have 93+ undergraduate credit hours completed at the start of the program.
  • MAT Director Approval
  • Photocopy of ID, passport, or driver's license
  • Completion of a background check clearance from the Polk County School Board (PCSB)
  • *Self-directed interest inventory evaluation may be required.

Can this program be completed 100% online?

This program is 100% online excluding the capstone internship which is completed in a Polk County Public School. However, most students receive their Professional Teaching Certificate and transfer into the Master of Education in Transformational Curriculum and Instruction program where no internship is required.

How many classes is considered full-time?

A student is considered full-time when taking a minimum of 8 credit hours at the graduate level.

How can this degree help my career?

This degree will strengthen your skills as a classroom teacher as well as provide you with more options regarding your career path in other district level positions, higher level education teaching positions and the opportunity in a doctoral level degree program.

How long does it typically take to complete the program?

Most students complete the program coursework in as few as three semesters then complete the internship in the fourth semester.

Do I have to complete the Florida Teacher Certificate Exams (FTCE)?

Yes, all MAT students must complete the FTCE within the first 12 credit hours in the program.
