Your 2012 summer travel destinations led by Florida Southern faculty include:

Bermuda

Bermuda - Summer 2012: Behavioral Ecology of Tropical Lizards - BIO 3997 (6 credit hours). This course focuses on the Anolis lizards of Bermuda as a model system with which to address fundamental issues in behavioral ecology. Groups of 2-4 students will conduct pre-assigned research projects, such as the use of portable spectrometry to assess correlations of lizard dewlap coloration with habitat light spectrum, use of robotic lizards to test the relative importance of color and motion displays in species recognition, and GPS mapping of the three Anolis species' distributions on Bermuda.

 

GermanyGermany - Summer 2012: Germany's Approach to Sports Performance - HMP/PED 2150 (6 credit hours). On this trip you will study the unique approaches that German Sport Universities and Olympic Training facilities use to create elite training environments for their athletes. We will run on their tracks, walk through their labs, play in their facilities, study with their students, collaborate on projects and enjoy their culture. We will also have some serving moments while we are in several of the cities. During our serving moments, we may host a sports camp, design a new curriculum, teach robotics/biomechanics classes to elementary students, create a sports festival day or simply visit with some people who are most in need. Can you imagine zip-lining across the Munich Olympic Stadium? Or, imagine having a long jump contest at the Olympic Training facility in Heidelberg?

 

Harlaxton 2011Harlaxton - Summer 2012: (6 credit hours). All students participating in this trip will be required to take a 2-credit Cultural Encounters course (INT 2997) and their choice of one of the following options:

Intercultural Communication - SPC 2270 (4 credit hours). This course explores the unique relationship between communication and culture. Students examine their own beliefs, values, behaviors, and norms as they are exposed to a variety of cultural dynamics and more in this increasingly global society. This course balances concepts and theories of intercultural communication with practical application. The goal of this course is to enhance the student's effectiveness as a communicator and as a citizen of the global community.

Shakespeare: Speak the Speech - THE 2997 (4 credit hours). In this course, students will engage in an exploration of Shakespeare's life and writings through the examination and research of his life and times, and of selected plays, including historical research, scholarly interpretations of the text, critical reviews of the text, reviews of past productions, and the viewing of live theatre productions in England. Students will be required to learn organizational speech patterns, write and revise, and deliver polished speeches on selected research projects.

 

IrelandIreland, England & France - Summer 2012: (4-6 credit hours). The Department of Art and Art History is offering a spectacular tour of Ireland, England, and France. The group will be spending approximately a week each in Dublin, London, and Paris with day trips to a variety of locations. Highlights of the trip include Warwick Castle, Guinness Museum, Bath and Stonehenge, White Cliffs of Dover, famous Double Decker Bus tours, the Louvre and more! All participants will enroll in one, four-credit hour course. Students may also enroll in INT 2997 for two additional credit hours if academic credit is needed for a full six credits during the summer term. Preparatory coursework will begin during the spring semester. The final critique for the photography classes will be in conjunction with an exhibition in the Melvin Art Gallery in the fall. Students may rent a digital camera from the Department of Art and Art History if needed.

Illustration & Drawing - ART 1133 (4 credit hours). An introduction to various drawing media and methods of representation in line and tone.

Intro to Digital Photography - ART 1140 (4 credit hours). This course will cover aspects of digital photography such as image capture and digital processing, design, lighting, and digital technology. Assignments will be given to explore creativity, problem solving, and understanding the camera. Students will focus on capturing their surroundings using specific techniques for landscape, architectural, and cultural (i.e., people) photography. A critique will occur at the end of each assignment to discuss solutions, problems, and successes. Applications and printing will also be covered in this class.

Advanced Digital Photography - ART 3440 (4 credit hours). This course will cover aspects of digital photography such as image capture and digital processing, design, lighting and digital technology. Assignments will be given to explore creativity, problem solving, and understanding the camera; we will focus on capturing our surroundings using specific techniques for landscape, architectural and cultural (i.e. people) photography. Estudio Sampere 2010

Spain - Summer 2012: (6 credit hours). Students will attend Estudio Internacional Sampere, one of the pioneers of modern language teaching in Spain. Classes are small - no more that 10 students per class and programs are designed for all levels of Spanish language study. Language skills will be tested prior to course placement. All participants are housed with Spanish families in close proximity to EIS. For 2012, students will study at EIS locations in Alicante and Salamanca.

 

 

ScotlandEngland and Scotland - Summer 2012: (4 credit hours). Students will examine the origin, decisive events, and distinctive persons and movements of the Christian tradition in England and Scotland in the context of the actual locations and sites related to its history.  The course aims at developing an appreciation for the contributions and struggles of and conflicts within the church in England and Scotland.
