Your first year on campus is likely to be a bit overwhelming as you become acclimated to your new home.
At Florida Southern, we’ll help ease your transition with living environments dedicated specifically to first-year students.
Student Life › Community Living › First-Year Halls
These freshmen-only residence areas give you the chance to adapt to college life with people who are experiencing the same anxieties and concerns as you. Together, you’ll become familiar with the campus, how residence life works, and ways in which you can contribute positively to the Florida Southern community. The layout of the facilities encourages safe, friendly, and comfortable interaction. You will be amazed at how quickly you connect with others and make new friends!
The positive student life atmosphere and exciting residence life programming provide the perfect setting for creating lifelong memories. Your residence hall will become more than a place to sleep and study. You’ll also participate in programming designed to enhance your academic, personal, and social growth.
First-year housing also offers a lower student-to-staff ratio—typically 20 students per resident advisor (RA) as compared to 35:1 for upper-class housing. Resident advisors are undergraduate students, too, so that means you’ll get the support, understanding, and guidance you need when you need it the most.
And, of course, you’ll find the usual residence hall amenities in this special environment: Nicely decorated and furnished rooms (bed, dresser, desk, and desk chair) and access to the Internet and campus network.
For the ladies:
. Affectionately known as “JR,” Joseph-Reynolds Hall combines everything you’d want in a residence hall: history, personality, and functionality into one building. As one of the four original buildings on campus, JR offers one of the best views on campus. It sits atop a hill overlooking beautiful Lake Hollingsworth. This facility features a combination of single-, double-, or triple-occupancy rooms in a layout that is far from traditional in any sense of the word. In fact, we’d suggest using a map in the beginning so you can find your way around. Community life is big here—the women of JR form groups within the building as a whole and also within the “wings” and smaller hallways. JR and its companion hall, Spivey, are located in the center of campus between Edge Hall and Ordway.
Also one of four original buildings on campus, “Spivey,” as it’s called, offers a relatively traditional hall setting consisting of single, double, and triple-occupancy rooms in hallways in the shape of a U. A four-story building, Spivey joins with Joseph-Reynolds Hall in the center of campus and is located between Edge Hall and the Ordway Building.
For the gentlemen:
First-year men live in Hollis Hall on the east side of campus near the Publix Commons and Dell. Hollis Hall is part of a three-building complex that includes Miller Hall and Dell Hall. It is a traditionally styled residence hall offering double-occupancy rooms for 180 residents. Hollis is well known for the close friendships its residents form with each other. Typically, a group of about 20 men live in one area under the guidance of a resident advisor.
