Can I have a pet?
A small fish in a small bowl is allowed.
How much money will I need?
As a resident student all of your your needs can be met on campus as part of your student fees. You'll likely want/need money for socializing or paying bills (long distance calls, cell phone, car, insurance, etc)
What type of security exists in the residence halls?
Each resident student must use their ID card to gain access to the locked front doors of the residence hall. In addition, each resident student would need to use his/her room key to access their individual room. Residence hall security depends largely on the students living in the building. Students should not prop open doors or let in people they don't know. Additionally, students are encouraged to keep their room doors locked at all times.
Can I have overnight guests?
You may host same gender overnight guests. These guests must be at least 17 years old and may not stay more than 3 consecutive nights.
Is it possible to see my specific room prior to moving in?
While we understand that everyone is excited about seeing and getting comfortable in their home away from home, we are unable to show students their specific rooms over the summer. Most of the summer each of the residence halls are occupied with a wide variety of camps and conferences. Outside of that time maintenance and cleaning must take place to prepare the halls for your arrival. If you are on campus for a tour or other business we'll do our best to show you a sample room depending on camp occupancy. New students can see the show rooms by contacting their admissions counselor.
What do I do if there is something in my room in need of repair?
It is certainly our hope that everything in your room will function properly upon your arrival and throughout the year, however, sometimes things need a little attention. Students may request repairs or other work within their room by clicking here.
After hours emergency repairs should be called in to Campus Safety or reported to a member of the Residence Life staff.
How many outlets will be in my room?
Unfortunately, there is no way to answer this question as each building and each room will have a different number of outlets. Student should plan to bring surge protectors to plug in their major appliances and computer (there is a lot of lightning in Lakeland!).
Florida Southern College works with a company that has cutting edge technology in surge protectors and extension cords. These items are specially designed to prevent fires from pinching, accidental damage, overload and surges. Information about the Fire Shield product is provided as part of the summer mailing from the Office of Residence Life. Please, help us protect our residential community!

How can I make long distance calls? Is there an active phone jack in each room? Is there voice mail?
All on campus and long distance calls can be made on campus free on charge. You can obtain a long distance code to make long distance calls from campus using Florida Southern's long distance provider, BTI. Students may also use calling cards or other toll free numbers for long distance access.
There is a phone jack in each residence hall room. You would need to bring your own phone or may check one out from Campus Safety.
Each student has their own voice mailbox at their extension at no additional fee.
Is there transportation to and from the airport?
Florida Southern College does not coordinate airport transportaition. Students are encouraged to utilize the yellow pages or Internet for this type of transportation.
Can first year students have a car on campus? How easy is it to find a parking spot on campus?
All students are welcome to bring a car to campus as long as they obtain a parking decal from Campus Safety and properly register their car. There are plenty of parking spaces on campus for both residential and commuter students. However, you may not always be able to park in the lot closest to your building. FSC is an intimate campus so we do ask residential students to walk and not drive to class to ensure space for commuter students.
Are there specifications for the type of refrigerator and microwave I can bring?
Yes, a refrigerator is not supposed to be larger than approximately 4 cubic feet. While there isn't a specific limitation on the type of microwave a student can bring, apartment sized microwaves are recommended.
Do I need to bring a computer to campus? Should I bring a desktop or laptop? Should I get a Mac or a PC?
There are multiple student computer labs on campus so a student shouldn't feel obligated to bring a computer to campus. Each of the residence hall rooms is wired for the Local Area Network (LAN). To connect to the network the computer would need a network card and a CAT 5 cable to connect.
The choice between desktop and laptop is an individual choice. If you think you'll bring the computer to class or study by the pool then you may prefer a laptop. However, laptops are harder to upgrade and easier to steal.
A student should make the choice between Mac and PC based upon their major and the recommendations of their department as well as personal preference. There are both Macs and PCs available in the student computer labs.
