Promoting the tradition of
brotherhood/sisterhood in the halls

The Publix Commons Greek Village at Florida Southern College not only develops life long friendships but also is designed to flourish in the areas of scholarship, leadership, brotherhood, and sisterhood. The partnership between FSC and national organizations to provide Greek housing on campus is a rich tradition and provides engagement for all Greek members in a supportive campus community.

The Greek Village was established to promote a direct link between residential, academic, and extracurricular life for fraternity and sorority members. Guidelines have been established to provide a successful collegiate experience for all members of the Greek Village, both independent and affiliated students. The college strives to work with all Greek members establishing a community atmosphere that is different from other campuses.

Because Florida Southern provides recognized Greek organizations with housing on campus, the Offices of Community Living and Greek Life have guidelines to provide chapter room and housing block space for Greek organizations. Reviews are conducted annually and more frequently, if needed, to determine the Greek chapter campus residential space.

Building Your Community

The Offices of Community Living and Greek Life & Student Organizations work together to determine the number of beds and location of space to be provided to the Greek organization. Below are the following guidelines for fulfilling the provided residential space with the Greek membership.

Greek Officers: The organization’s president and house manager are required to live in the housing block (unless they are Resident Advisors, in which they are assigned their residence by the Office of Community Living.)

Housing Vacancy: If, or when, housing vacancies occur within the housing block, regardless of the time of year, the following steps are followed:

Once a vacancy has been verified, the chapter’s president will be notified by the Assistant Director of Residence Life (or his/her designate) in writing acknowledging the vacancy and outlining the steps that should be followed.

The chapter will have seven (7) days from the date of the written notification to fill the vacancy with a member or friend of the organization (using the Interfraternity Council, Panhellenic Council and the Office of Community Living guidelines).

At the end of the seven-day period, the Office of Community Living reserves the right to place any student (someone who is not a member of the organization) in that vacant bed space.

Note: Each Greek chapter is required to provide a waitlist of alternate residents (including emails and cell phone numbers) at the time of the Room Reapplication Process that occurs annually in the spring for the fall semester. This list will allow the Office of Community Living to fill vacancies over the summer as they become available. It will also provide the chapter a list of students they can choose from if a vacancy occurs during the year.

Empty Beds - What Now?

If a chapter is unable to fill its entire housing block for the upcoming academic year by the deadline, the chapter’s president or designated leadership team member has a meeting with the Director of Community Living and the Director of Greek Life & Student Organizations. Being unable to fill beds for the first academic year may result in fewer rooms being designated to the specific Greek group’s housing block. The Director of Community Living and the Director of Greek Life & Student Organizations will conduct this meeting.

If a chapter is unable to fill its entire housing block in the second academic year, that organization is placed on housing probation and becomes in jeopardy of losing their entire residential space if they fail to fill their housing space during that year.

If a chapter does not fill its entire housing block in preparation for the third academic year (spring room sign up period prior to third year), that organization loses its the housing block.

If chapters feel there are extenuating circumstances for not meeting their housing expectations, they can appeal in writing to the Director of Community Living or a designate.

Remember, housing block assignments are reviewed annually. All requests for exceptions to these Greek housing guidelines must be in writing for the Director of Community Living, the Director of Greek Life & Student Organizations. Deadline is the published Room Reapplication Process date for that semester. The Office of Community Living reserves the right to make changes in housing block assignments at any time when necessary.
