Campus Announcements:
Advising for the Spring – Your
studentŐs one-on-one appointment with his/her advisor should be underway if it
hasnŐt taken place already. Registration gets underway in November based on hours. First up, this Monday at 8 p.m., students with 92 or more earned
hours (that does not include what they are currently enrolled in for this
semester). Also this coming week, Thursday, Nov. 8, students with 60 or more
earned hours may begin web registration at 8 p.m.
Nov. 9 – This is a date your student
may be hearing a lot about. This is the deadline for your student to drop a
course or courses with no academic penalty, meaning they will only receive a W
on his/her transcript. It requires signatures from the professor or professors
and the advisor and must be turned in to the RegistrarŐs office, by Friday,
Nov. 9, at 5 p.m. You and your student need to be aware that dropping a course may
impact financial aid. Your student should consult with his/her professor and
advisor to determine if this is an appropriate decision.
Thanksgiving
Break Approaches – Will your student be staying
on campus during Thanksgiving Break. Deadline to sign up is fast approaching - Nov.

Peer Assisted
Study Sessions (PASS)
Think
"super group" learning! PASS is where students work together to
reinforce key concepts and develop effective study strategies. Whether you are
a top performer or could use some improvement, you will benefit from the skills
and understanding gained from attending PASS. The most obvious result of PASS
is that students who attend regularly consistently can earn a higher grade.
PASS is also a great way to network with other students in your course.

First-Year
Advice:
Many students enjoyed reading the
popular Hunger Games series before the movie came out this past year. However,
reading a text book requires a different skill set than reading a novel. If
your student could benefit from additional skills in this area, they may wish
to attend our next Academic Improvement Session – Reading with Purpose.
The program is this upcoming Wednesday, Nov. 7 from 10:40 – 11:30 a.m. in
Rogers Auditorium. Students who attend will leave with practical skills. I hope
youŐll encourage your student to attend.
Second-Year
Insight:
Second-year
students only have one week left to meet with their advisors to prepare to
registration on Monday, November 12 at 8:00pm (30+ credit hours). Make
sure your student has a plan in place with a few alternate courses in mind.
They should also verify that their student account is up to date so that a
financial hold doesnŐt prevent them from registering. The Student
Solutions Center will be on hand the evening of November 12 in the Rinker
Technology Center to assist with registration and provide free pizza.
From
the FSC Counseling Center:
LetŐs
Take a Vote. I
donŐt know about you but IŐve seen enough political ads lately to last me for a
while. Maybe you have, too, and even if youŐre not a resident of a swing
state like Florida, I think youŐll relate to this little girl. Take a
look: http://now.msn.com/little-girl-cries-over-election-coverage. I hope youŐre planning to
vote for your candidate and that youŐve encouraged your sons and daughters to
vote, too. Just in case you or your students are unsure about whether
itŐs worthwhile to go to the trouble of voting, consider the following:
á
If you vote, it
earns you the right to complain about your elected officials.
á
If you vote, you
get to cancel out a vote for your candidateŐs opponent.
á
If you vote, you
set a wonderful example for others, especially your sons and daughters.
á
If you vote, you
honor all those who fought and died for your right to vote.
á
And, finally, if
you think your one vote doesnŐt matter, remember the 2000 election when just a
few hundred votes determined the outcome of the election. (Try not to
cry; itŐll all be over soon.)
Career
Center:
ItŐs EXPO
time! The Career, Internship & Graduate
School Expo is this coming this Wednesday, November 7th from
10-1 in the Honeyman Pavilion. We currently have 12 graduate programs and 26
companies/organizations attending this event. Students should come dressed to impress,
professional dress is required. They are able to meet and network with varied
organizations to find an internship or future full-time job. It is never too
early to take advantage of this fantastic opportunity to connect with possible
employers and graduate programs.

Final Thoughts – If you are one of the families impacted by
Sandy in the Northeast, please know there are resources for your student here
at FSC. Our Counseling Center is a great place for him/her to turn to for
conversation. Please let us know if your student needs other resources. You
continue to be in our thoughts and prayers.
