Campus Announcements:
Election Time – Students
have a couple of times this week to put some more thought into the upcoming
election. The FSC Honors Program will host its fall Supper Seminar, Oct. 30, at
6 p.m. in Edge 303. The speakers will be Dr. Bruce Anderson and Dr. Kelly
McHugh. Their talk, ÒThe Pseudo-Science of Election Prediction: Crystal Ball
Gazing and AnalysisÓ will have an election theme, as will the dinner being
served. For more details, youÕll have to show up in person! This event is
sponsored by the Honors Program, and is open to all students and faculty. On
Thursday, Nov. 1, Dr. Anderson will again present but this time itÕs the HereÕs
the Scoop program and ÒWere you born to party?Ó Dr. Anderson will discuss what
influences your political decisions and affiliation. Students can catch that
presentation (and some ice cream) in Dell Hall at 8 p.m.
Advising for the Spring – Your
student should have attended his/her group advising session on Wednesday.
One-on-one appointments with the advisor should be underway. Registration gets underway in November based on hours.

Peer Assisted
Study Sessions (PASS)
Think
"super group" learning! PASS is where students work together to
reinforce key concepts and develop effective study strategies. Whether you are
a top performer or could use some improvement, you will benefit from the skills
and understanding gained from attending PASS. The most obvious result of PASS
is that students who attend regularly consistently can earn a higher grade.
PASS is also a great way to network with other students in your course.

Advice:
The Scoop, Thursday, November 1 at 8
p.m. in Dell Hall.
With elections just around the corner,
encourage your students to join Dr. Bruce Anderson, political science
professor, as he discusses what influences our political decisions and
affiliation. Politics is a hot topic, so weÕll serve ice cream to help cool things
off!
Each month features a different
educational topic as part of The Scoop series.
From
the FSC Counseling Center:
Real Enough for
Ya? When people talk to college students
about the Òreal worldÓ theyÕll encounter after college, IÕm never quite sure
what they mean. My guess is that they think college students have an easy
time of it, that college is basically a four year vacation before joining that
real world. In fact, college is about as real as it gets. TodayÕs
college students have a pretty heavy load if you think about whatÕs expected of
them. TheyÕre supposed to leave home for the first time, assume
responsibility for things theyÕve never previously been responsible for, meet
family expectations, live amicably with one or more strangers, make healthy
choices and stay out of trouble, organize their studies and make good grades,
participate in clubs and organizations, establish lifelong friendships, have a
social life (but not too much of one), maybe even meet their lifeÕs partner,
and, on top of all that, know what they want to do for the rest of their lives
so they can choose the right major, get a good job, and become independent adults.
Whew!!! So no more of that chat about the Òreal world.Ó
How can you help your student cope
with all this reality? First, you can recognize the very real pressures
of college life and understand if your student has problems in one or more areas.
It takes considerable practice to become adept at managing conflicting demands
and skillfully handle stressful situations. Second, you can provide
support and encouragement if your student is questioning himself or herself in
one or more areas. Let your student know that itÕs okay to question, that
questioning oneself and re-examining oneÕs values are important aspects of the
educational process. And, finally, you can remind yourself that your
studentÕs development from child to adult is almost complete. This final
stage has its stressors but itÕs also thrilling and extremely gratifying to see
your child take on adult roles and responsibilities. After all, this is
what you and they have been working toward all their lives.
