Campus Announcements:

Group Advising Straight Ahead – One of the most important academic steps takes place this Wednesday with Group Advising. Group Advising is a valuable experience offering students the opportunity to interact and build relationships with faculty and peers. At this session, students will gain important information about their academic departments, the experiences of their peers and other important information to help enhance their FSC experience. During this time, students will schedule required individual meetings with their advisors as a way to plan for the spring semester. Please encourage your student to participate in this event. Particularly for our first-year students, this will be the first time they will take the steps to registering themselves for spring classes. Group Advising takes place on Wednesday at 10:40 a.m. at various locations on campus. Your student should look for numerous postings.

Academic Reminders (always good to know):

á      Group Advising takes place Wed., Oct. 24, 10:40 a.m. Remind your student to check the schedules posted around campus for locations.

á      If your student is needing some academic help:

Tutor Tables– Mondays and Tuesdays 6-8 p.m., Student Solutions Center – Natural Sciences, Math, Social Sciences

PENS Central Writing Lab open for assistance

Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS)

Think "super group" learning! PASS is where students work together to reinforce key concepts and develop effective study strategies. Whether you are a top performer or could use some improvement, you will benefit from the skills and understanding gained from attending PASS. The most obvious result of PASS is that students who attend regularly consistently can earn a higher grade. PASS is also a great way to network with other students in your course.

First-Year Advice:

One of the great resources we have in the Student Solutions Center is a computerized Learning Style Assessment. Please encourage your student to stop by and take the brief assessment. Once completed, one of our staff members will discuss ways to utilize this information and create a personal study plan. ItÕs a great way to gain new insights and also pick up a few ideas for test preparation.

Second-Year Insight:

Has your student recently declared or changed their major?  If so, they likely have a new advisor.  Group advising meetings are next week and students can contact the RegistrarÕs office or the Student Solutions Center to make sure they know who their advisor is and which meeting to attend.

From the FSC Counseling Center:

Looking Up.  Things are getting better but the past few years have been pretty tough.  Many families have had to deal with major financial setbacks and belts have been tightened to the very last hole.  But like most clouds, it has a silver lining.  Or at least one of silver plate.  This cloud provides us with a perfect opportunity to talk with our sons and daughters about money, debt, saving, investing, all the financial choices they will soon be making for themselves as they enter the world of work and career.  If they see us take some positive lessons from this economic downturn, it will help them make good choices in their own lives.  We can model delayed gratification by saving for the new big screen TV instead of charging it today on the credit card.  We can take a family stay-cation instead of an expensive cruise.  We can clip coupons, shop sales, and buy generic.  We can show them that small savings made consistently over time turn into real money.  Even if your family finds it harder to have the money talk than the sex talk, itÕs worth making the effort to have these conversations with your students because the financial choices they make early on will determine to a great extent their future financial security.  Good luck!

Career Center:

ÒMocÓ Interview Day is this coming Wednesday, October 24th. If students signed-up theyÕll receive an email or phone call from us as a reminder. They should double check their appointment time and make sure theyÕre dressed professionally, have a resume, and arrive at least 5-10 minutes prior to the interview time. If your student misses this opportunity, we will have another one in the spring, so keep an eye out for the announcement.

On Thursday, October 25th @ 4:00 p.m. in the PresidentÕs Dining Room we have our second Career Spotlight Series event. If your student is interested in the medical field, we welcome them to visit with alumni and find out how they got into their current position. They can learn and network with these successful individuals. Refreshments provided!

From the Nina B. Hollis Wellness Center:

WhatÕs happening at the Wellness Center?

Final Thoughts – ItÕs time for your student to get hands on with his/her schedule. Group Advising this Wednesday is an important first-step. Before registration takes place in November, your student will need to make sure they are free of any holds – advisor, business office or accountability. These can be viewed on the portal. Group Advising and then the one-on-one appointment with his/her faculty advisor is a key component to making sure your student is pursuing success at FSC.

All the best – Shari
