Fall Break – A friendly reminder that Fall Break arrives next month. Your student is allowed to stay in the residence hall at no charge during this period (they will be required to sign up to stay). During this break in the action, many students use it for studying or just plain relaxing. Below are a few of the other offerings during that time.

á      During Alternative Breaks students perform short term projects for community agencies and learn about issues such as literacy, poverty, racism, hunger, homelessness and the environment. The objectives of an alternative break program are to involve college students in community-based service projects and to give students opportunities to learn about the problems faced by members of communities with whom they otherwise may have had little or no direct contact. For 2012Ős Alternative Fall Break, students will spend 3 days volunteering at Give Kids the World, a nonprofit ŇstorybookÓ resort located in Central Florida, where children with life-threatening illnesses and their families are treated to a weeklong, cost-free fantasy vacation.

Date: October 6 – 8, 2012
Time: Will leave campus at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday and return to campus at 10:00 p.m. on Monday.
Location: Kissimmee, FL
Cost: $110 (includes lodging, travel, breakfast & snacks, Universal ticket, and a service t-shirt)

REGISTRATION ENDS 9/24/12

*All students must attend a mandatory orientation session before the trip*

á      The Center for Student Involvement is sponsoring a trip to St. Augustine during fall break. The Discover Florida series would not be complete without a trip it its oldest city. This three-day all inclusive trip to St. Augustine (October 9-11, 2012) will feature visits to the Castillo de San Marcos Fort, the St. Augustine Lighthouse, a late-night Ghost Tour, a scenic cruise, and time to explore the city. All meals, transportation, and hotel stay will be covered for an all-inclusive price of $150.00. Students may sign up at http://www.flsouthern.edu/KCMS/Student-Life/Discover-FL.aspx and more information can be found by stopping by the Center for Student Involvement, located in the Bandshell or by calling 863.680.4499.

Academic Reminders:

á      September 19 – Final Day to drop an ŇAÓ Course

á      Tutor Tables– Mondays and Tuesdays 6-8 p.m., Student Solutions Center – Natural Sciences, Math, Social Sciences

á      PENS Central Writing Lab open for assistance

á      Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS)

Think "super group" learning! PASS is where students work together to reinforce key concepts and develop effective study strategies. Whether you are a top performer or could use some improvement, you will benefit from the skills and understanding gained from attending PASS. The most obvious result of PASS is that students who attend regularly consistently can earn a higher grade. PASS is also a great way to network with other students in your course.

First-Year Advice:

For most incoming students, the biggest challenge is adjusting to the expectations and workload of the college versus high school. A higher level of effort is required to receive the same caliber of grades.  This can be frustrating for the student who earns a C on an essay that would have previously earned them an A. Be supportive and remind your student to utilize the many resources for assistance on our campus including the Student Solutions Center and their advisor. We are here to help with those stressful moments of adjusting to college.

Second-Year Insight:

Are your students finding their classes as a sophomore more difficult than classes they took in their first year?  Tutor Tables is now available on Monday and Tuesday evenings in the Student Solutions Center.  As many students have their first exams of the semester next week, encourage your student to start studying early and take care of themselves by eating well and getting plenty of rest.

From the FSC Career Center:

Many parents wonder what is the Law School Caravan? It is 40+ of the top law schools in the US right here on our campus! Even if your student is not interested in law school they can talk to an admissions counselor who can share their insight into many of their other programs.  This is a great opportunity for them to exchange information with top recruiters and learn more about the graduate school process. This event takes place on Thursday, September 13, 2010 from 10-12 in the Honeyman Pavilion (the lobby of Branscomb Auditorium).

Is your student considering graduate school? They can join us for an informative event: Preparing for Graduate School on Tuesday, September 11 @ 4:00 p.m. or Wednesday, September 12 @ 10:45 a.m. in the Career Center. At this seminar they will get an action plan to help them prepare for the graduate school application process.

From the FSC Counseling Center:

To Solve or Not to Solve.  That really is the question.  Do you jump right in and fix things when your student has a problem?  If you do, it may be because thatŐs what youŐve always done and it just seems natural.  However, now that your student is in college, it may be time to reexamine that pattern.  Think of the college years as a bridge between a warm and nurturing childhood and the cold, cruel world of adulthood.  Okay, maybe the adult world isnŐt so horrible and maybe there are even some compensating advantages to being an independent, grown-up person.  Still, the college years do offer a relatively safe period for students to perfect the skills of adulthood. We parents know that graduating from college or reaching a milestone birthday like age 21 does not automatically confer maturity but itŐs easy to forget that the skills needed to become a well adjusted, fully functioning adult donŐt come automatically either and, in fact, require considerable practice.  A happy adult life calls for effective problem-solving, good money management, strong organizational skills, well developed conflict resolution skills, the ability to get along with all kinds of people, social ease, effective  self-advocacy, and various other skills and abilities.  Like any other skill your student ever mastered, these skills will be mastered through practice and will include some failures.  So, the next time your student has a problem and youŐre tempted to step in and solve it, take a deep breath and say, ŇWhat do you think you could do to fix things?Ó  You may be surprised to discover that your student has a pretty good idea of what to do.  If your student canŐt identify a next step, perhaps together you can brainstorm a few ideas and you can encourage him or her to act.  Try it.  ItŐs easier than you think.  It says, ŇI believe in you,Ó and itŐs a gift only you can give your son or daughter.
