New residence hall
to be dedicated at FSC
LAKELAND, Fla. (Jan. 26,
2004) - Florida Southern College will hold a dedication ceremony
Feb. 6 for the recently completed Miller Residence Hall. The event
takes place at 12:30 p.m. at the entrance to the hall on Columbia
Way.
The three-million-dollar residence hall addition was made possible
through the generous funding of John R. Miller II and his wife Eleanor
H. Miller, of Winter Haven, Fla. The building was designed by Wallis,
Murphey, Boyington, Architects of Lakeland, Fla., and built by Rodda
Construction, also of Lakeland. The three story building includes
76 student rooms, an elevator, laundry facilities and lobby area.
It connects with the existing Hollis and Dell Halls on Columbia
Way.
The Millers are long-time friends of the college, establishing the
Eleanor Honeyman and John R. Miller II Scholarship in 1987 and endowing
the John and Eleanor Miller Chair in Communication in 1991. The
Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Polk County Science Building Planetarium
restoration, including a new star machine, and the Honeyman Pavilion
addition at Branscomb Auditorium were also made possible through
their generosity.
The Millers will attend the ceremony and Mr. Miller will speak.
Officials attending and making remarks include FSC President Thomas
L. Reuschling, college Chaplain Timothy S. Wright, board of trustees
chair Sarah D. McKay, and Student Government Association president
Cat Tobin. Invited guests include members of FSC's board of trustees
and the President's Council, local officials and executives, architect
Michael Murphey, and contractor John A. Rodda.
