Academic department awards given
at Florida Southern College

LAKELAND, Fla. (May 18, 2004) - The Florida Southern College Academic Department Awards were announced at Honors Convocation on April 21. The following students/graduates received department awards and/or scholarships: 

Apopka Garden Club Scholarship
- David Pederson, a junior recreational grass turf management major from Zephyrhills, Fla. 

Banks Medal in Religion
- Elenor E. Skipper, a senior religion major. She is the daughter of Steven and Elizabeth Skipper of Lake Placid, Fla.

Sam Banks Scholarship
- Justin Smith, a junior recreational grass turf management major. He is the son of Durward and Cindy Smith of Arcadia, Fla. 

Herman & Theresa Tieser Baum Scholarship in Biology
(2) - Joshua Berman, a senior biology major and son of Glennalee Berman of London, Ont. and Marshall Berman; and Mario Menchaca, a senior biology major from Lakeland, Fla.

Biology Merit Award
- Jamielyn Daugherty, a senior biology/environmental study major. She is the daughter of James and Janet Daugherty of Winter Haven, Fla. 

John J. Brennan Scholarship
- Ashley Nugent, a junior citrus major. She is the daughter of William and Kimberly Nugent of Arcadia, Fla. 

T.G. Buckner Medal in Philosophy
- Joy Beurrier, a senior English major. She is the daughter of Jim and Paulette Beurrier of Stuart, Fla. 

Dick Burnette Criminology Award -
Shey Chodnicki, a sophomore and son of Dennis and Lynn Chodnicki of Salisbury, Md. 

Cantilevers Student Writing Award
(2) - In poetry: Joy Buerrier, a senior English major and daughter of Jim and Paulette Beurrier of Stuart, Fla.; in fiction: Brittany Melson, a senior English major and daughter of William and Susan Melson of Lakeland, Fla. 

Robert A. Chapman Sociology Medal
- Dawn Henderson, a senior mathematics major. She is the daughter of Wayne and Linda Henderson of Avon Park, Fla. 

John W. Cook Medal in Christian Education
- Julie Rosselle, a senior Christian education major and daughter of William and Carol Rosselle of Gainesville, Fla. 

Department of Citrus & Horticulture Science Faculty Award
(3) - Clayton Amestoy, a senior recreational grass turf management major and son of Richard and Kim Amestoy of Boynton Beach, Fla.; Carey Howerton, a senior recreational grass turf management major and son of Charles and Donna Howerton of Sebring, Fla.; Dan McCollum, a senior recreational grass turf management major and son of Donald McCollum of Loxahatchee, Fla.; and Tovah Siegel, a senior environmental horticulture/business major and daughter of Jay Siegel and Vancy Siegel of Lakeland, Fla.

Florida Citrus Mutual Outstanding Student Achievement Leadership Award
- Nikki Upthegrove, a senior citrus major and daughter of Robert and Joyce Upthegrove of Plant City, Fla.

Florida Club Scholarship Award
- Matt Carter, a sophomore citrus major. He is the son of James and Sandra Carter of Newport News, Va. 

Florida Department of Citrus "Outstanding Citrus Student" Award
- Derek DeVane, a senior citrus major. He is the son of Kenneth and Sandra DeVane of Ft. Meade, Fla. 

Lake Region FNGA "Outstanding Horticulture Major" Award
- Kelly Justice, a senior environmental horticulture/landscape design major and daughter of Russell and Edith Justice of Orlando, Fla. 

Food Machinery Corporation Citrus Scholarship
(2) - Jason Johnson, a junior citrus major and son of Ted and Kathy Johnson of Avon Park, Fla.; and Laurie Plank, a junior marketing citrus major and daughter of David and Elizabeth Plank of Lake Placid, Fla.
