Frank N. Schubert,
historian with Joint Chiefs
of Staff, to speak at FSC's Florida Lecture Series
LAKELAND, Fla. (Jan. 20,
2003) - Florida Southern College's Center for Florida History welcomes
Dr. Frank N. Schubert, historian with the Joint Chiefs of Staff,
Washington, D.C., to the Florida Lecture Series Jan. 30. Schubert
will speak on "Seeking David Fagen: the Search for a Black Rebel's
Florida Roots." The lecture will start at 7 p.m. in the William
M. Hollis Seminar Room on campus. The lecture is free and open to
the public.
"We are very pleased to have Dr. Schubert give us an early start
on African American History month here at FSC," noted James M. Denham,
Director of the FSC Center for Florida History. "Dr. Schubert program's
will help kick off a two-day symposium, the Third Annual Symposium/Festival
African American Heritage of Peninsular Florida, that continues
in Bartow over the weekend, co-sponsored by the Center for Florida
History."
Born in Washington, D.C., Schubert graduated from Howard University,
and then earned his master's degree from the University of Wyoming
and Ph.D. from the University of Toledo. He served in the United
States Army from 1965 to 1968, including one year in Vietnam, where
he rose to the rank of captain. He has been a historian in the Department
of Defense since 1977 and has been chief of the Joint Operational
History Branch in the Joint History Office, Office of the Chairman,
Joint Chiefs of Staff, since October 1993. Schubert has written
extensively on military subjects, including frontier exploration,
black soldiers, and military construction, and has lectured at universities
in Hungary and Romania. A specialist on buffalo soldiers, he has
written several books including "On the Trail of the Buffalo Soldier:
Biographies of African-Americans in the U.S. Army, 1866-1917;" "Black
Valor: Buffalo Soldiers and the Medal of Honor, 1870-1898;" and
"Voices of the Buffalo Soldier: Records, Reports, and Recollections
of Military Service in the West," due out in Spring 2003.

The Florida Lecture Series, produced by the Center for Florida History,
brings speakers to the Lakeland campus who approach the issue of
"Florida Life and Culture" from a wide range of disciplines, including
history, public affairs, law, sociology, criminology, anthropology,
literature, music and art. Its overall objective is to create an
opportunity for members of the community, faculty, and student body
to listen to, interact with and learn from leading scholars and
specialists of the state's history and culture.
