Florida Southern holds spring commencement

LAKELAND, Fla. (April 29, 2002) - Two hundred eighty-five Florida Southern College students received diplomas during two graduation ceremonies Saturday.

Students receiving degrees during the morning baccalaureate service included 16 from the Orlando program, 18 from the Lakeland evening program, and 10 from the graduate program. Twelve students graduated with honors, with four summa cum laude, four magna cum laude, and four cum laude.

Baccalaureate speaker The Rev. William Dean Witten, a district superintendent of the Orlando District of the United Methodist Church, received an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree during the service in recognition of his distinguished career with the United Methodist Church.

The afternoon commencement for 241 Lakeland day students was held in the Jenkins Field House. Honors went to 69 graduates, with 21 summa cum laude, 18 magna cum laude, and 30 cum laude. Second District Court of Appeal Judge Emiliano Jose Salcines of Tampa, a 1959 graduate of Florida Southern, delivered the commencement address. Salcines received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree for his 40 years of service in the legal profession.
