New Students Orientation › Frequently Asked Questions

How do I register for classes? 
During the month of May, you will receive instructions that will guide you as you indicate your preferences for class selection. All first-year students are registered by our team of staff and faculty who carefully place incoming students in classes based upon these indicated preferences.

When will I get my course schedule?
You will receive directions for viewing your fall 2009 schedule by August 1. Keep in mind that this is Pre-Registration and you will have the opportunity to work with your faculty advisor during the fall Orientation to finalize your schedule.  

Where can I read about the classes available at Florida Southern?
All course descriptions are listed in the academic catalog.

What is FYS 101?
The First Year Seminar is a required course for first-year students at Florida Southern College. This three-semester hour course, taught by college faculty, is designed to help you succeed as you begin your college experience. 

When should I plan to arrive in the Fall?
All students must check-in to the college in the Nina B. Hollis Wellness Center Gym from 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday, August 22. If you are a residential student, you will also move in on Saturday. Residential students must complete College Check-In before moving into their residential halls. Commuter students are encouraged to check-in from 1 p.m.- 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 22.

Is Orientation required?
YES.
All new students must attend the fall Orientation program which begins on Saturday, August 22 and last until classes begin on Wednesday, August 26. Registration is not finalized until you attend Orientation and meet with your faculty advisor.

Is there a program available for my family to attend?
Yes, several sessions and events are planned especially for families throughout Saturday and Sunday of Orientation. We strongly encourage families to attend. Our family program concludes Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m.

What do I need to know about on campus computing?
Information Services
provides detailed information regarding all aspects of on campus computing. 

How do I register my vehicle?
You are required to register your vehicle with the Safety Department

When may I get my campus work assignment?
For information on campus work assignments, please contact Jackie Myers, Work Program Coordinator, at 863.680.4143.

Where can I get advice on how to have a successful semester? 
Contact the Student Solutions Center located in the Raulerson Seminar Building (BA) next to the Water Dome at 863.680.4900.
