Festival of Fine Arts Pays Tribute to Robert MacDonald, Adds Russian Symphony, Capitol Steps to Lineup
LAKELAND, Fla. (Oct. 17, 2011) – The 52nd season of the Festival of Fine Arts is underway at Florida Southern College with theatrical performances and art exhibitions. Now the Music Department opens its portion of the Festival with its Opening Gala: A Tribute to Robert MacDonald at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 22 in Branscomb Auditorium. In addition, two exciting special events to this season’s lineup have just been announced – the prestigious Tchaikovsky St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra and the hilarious political satire troupe, the Capitol Steps. Ensembles and soloists from FSC’s Department of Music will perform in honor of Mr. MacDonald, who was professor of piano studies, artist-in-residence, and director of the Festival from 1964 until his retirement earlier this year. A reception for Mr. MacDonald will follow the performance in the Honeyman Pavilion adjacent to the Auditorium. “The Festival of Fine Arts owes its success over the decades to Bob MacDonald. Thanks to him, the cultural life of the College and the community has been greatly enriched,” said Dr. Robert H. Tate, Vice President for External Relations at FSC. “It’s very fitting that we honor him in his retirement with this Gala concert.” This year’s Festival has returned to its original format, featuring primarily the talent of the faculty and students at FSC in the musical and theatrical performances and art exhibitions. Two new special events have been added to the schedule, however. The Tchaikovsky St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra will perform at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 26 in Branscomb Auditorium, with piano soloist Alexander Pirozhinko. And in the midst of primary election season, the Capitol Steps will bring their own musical comedy version of events at 7:30 p.m. on March 16 in Branscomb Auditorium as part of the College’s annual Homecoming celebration. Ticket prices for these special events will be $20 per person. Further details about these events will be forthcoming. An updated schedule for the 2011-2012 Festival of Fine Arts is attached.
