FSC First Private School in Florida to Affiliate with The Washington Center

Premier internship program provides exceptional field opportunities for students

LAKELAND, FL (March 24, 2011) – Florida Southern College has affiliated with the highly regarded, non-partisan Washington Center (TWC), an internship provider with international scope. Florida Southern College is the only private institution of higher education in the state of Florida to affiliate with The Washington Center. This affiliation will allow FSC students to access prestigious and valuable field experiences as part of their undergraduate studies.

This relationship represents the latest expansion of the College’s nationally recognized, engaged learning program.

Founded in 1975 by William and Sheila Burke, TWC is an independent, non-profit organization that provides students with challenging opportunities to work and learn from real world experiences. The Washington Center offers two programs; tailored internships that are academic and work experienced based for governmental, international, corporate and nonprofit organizations, as well as intensive-learning academic seminars focused on timely topics. Both opportunities allow for learning in professional fields ranging from public policy and media, to international affairs and electoral politics.

“The Washington Center is widely regarded amongst governmental, business, and not-for-profit organizations as a leader in the field,” said Dr. Matt Thompson, Vice President and Dean of Student Development at Florida Southern College. “We look forward to the opportunities this will provide to our students as they enhance their classroom experience and education.”

The opportunity offered by TWC for students to experience the world beyond the classroom is an essential component of the student-centered, collaborative, academic philosophy in place at Florida Southern College. The College philosophy of engaged learning was nationally recognized in October 2010 by the National Society of Experiential Education with the awarding of the Society’s William M. Burke Award. The award, named in honor of one of the founders of TWC, resulted in a scholarship to send the first FSC student to study at The Washington Center.
