LAKELAND, Fla. (Oct. 7, 2010) Florida Southern College's student chapter of the American Chemical Society (ACS) has been awarded a grant from the national ACS to create science experiment kits for students at Wahneta Elementary School in Winter Haven.

Working with a fifth-grade teacher at Wahneta, FSC students will assemble five kits each for five experiments that focus on topics covered by the Sunshine State Standards, the state's guidelines for information students should learn in each grade level. Each kit will come with instructions written in both English and Spanish, as Wahneta has a high percentage of children from Spanish-speaking families.

The Wahneta pupils will be asked to keep a journal of what they learn from each experiment, and the ACS chapter will present the childrens responses at the national ACS meeting next March, said Dr. Carmen Gauthier, professor of chemistry and the ACS chapter adviser at FSC.
